Oboe Solo - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1018945 Composed by Benjamin Harry Sajo. 20th Century,Contemporary. Individual part. 1 pages. Benjamin Sajo #6078673. Published by Benjamin Sajo (A0.1018945). Programme Notes: This composition was written to be considered for pairing alongside Ludwig van Beethoven’s Symphony #3, the Eroica, but can stand on its own virtues as an intense and slow meditation on heroism. The music is like a boiling pot on the stove that’s just began to overflow its bubbles. The first part of the title, kommos, is a Classical Greek term from Attic dramaturgy, literally meaning striking but specifically referring to beating oneself up during lamentation--ripping at the hair, gouging out the eyes--like Oedipus--slapping the forehead, and other acts amid moments of extreme emotional turmoil. For example, from Aeschylus's play Agamemnon, a character bewails: Apollo, Apollo! God of the Ways, my destroyer! For you have destroyed me-and utterly [...]What is this fresh woe [...]what monstrous, monstrous horror, beyond love's enduring, beyond all remedy? And help stands far away! We can easily imagine physical accompaniment to the script; rather than bottling up the pain, the hero lets it all explosively come out.  â€ƒThe second part of the title, When the world moved on, is an epigraph taken from American author Stephen King’s The Dark Tower epic. The primary setting of the novel, a world similar in many ways to our own, is experiencing a dark age where the glorious past is all but a distant memory and all good things are referred to wistfully as occurring, When the world moved on. Yet, the main protagonist, Roland, the last gunslinger, emphasizes that it is not just a figure of speech, but the literal distances between destinations have increased, the positions of the stars have changed, as well as the occurrence of other unnatural phenomena. The world has become a gulf of isolation from all corners. Taken together, this piece is a lamentation for when the world moved on. Truly completed on Yom Kippur during the Covid-19 Pandemic, being unable to fast or go to synagogue, this is my atonement.About the Composer: Benjamin Sajo (b. 1988) is a Canadian composer of contemporary classical music, as well as an educator. Oboe Solo - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.927664 Composed by Joseph Hollings. 20th Century,Contemporary. Individual part. 3 pages. Joseph Hollings Publishing #6683341. Published by Joseph Hollings Publishing (A0.927664). Duration: approx 4:00The Cry of Beltane for solo oboe was written for and premiered by an advanced, young oboe student, Leo Sherwood, and first performed in May 2017 as part of the Cleveland Composers Guild’s Creativity: Learning through Experience program. The piece was the program opener and is ideally suited to open a recital.Beltane is the anglicized name of the Celtic festival held on May Day, a pagan festival signifying the beginning of summer. The piece is intended to evoke a ritualistic, call to summer; a crying out and calling forth of sun and growth. The piece should sound aggressive and the oboe should aim to make the most of its harder-edged timbre, rather than its lyrical qualities. While the notation is precise, the piece should sound as if the performer had improvised it. The bigger the contrast in dynamics the better.Joseph Hollings (ASCAP) is a composer, arranger and music educator, and has taught music to students of all levels for over twenty five years. His arrangements have been performed internationally, including in London's West End, and have been recorded by the Onyx Brass Quintet and members of the Cleveland Orchestra. He studied composition with Harrison Birtwistle at King's College London, worked for the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company, and established Really Nearly Records with the ever-imaginative Tim Ten Yen. Joseph Hollings is a member of ASCAP. It is based in symmetry of intervals and their gradual transformation. It is a musical equivalent of someone’s experience by attending the Paraklitikos Canon to Virgin Mary a very famous ritual which takes place in Eastern Orthodox Church at August. The Miracle. In its stage form, the work, includes an introduction with two monastery talanton, (a percussive piece of wood, monks use for ceremonial calling) sounding in a canon before the sound of a censer. A narrator recites hymns (troparion) from the ceremony between the parts. The work draw the attention of exquisite performers as Michel Arrignion, Stathis Kiosoglou (first and second performance in Athens in 1991-1992) and Giannis Sabrovalakis who under the artistic direction of Theodor Antoniou gave a performance at the 3d Sacred Festival in island Patmos (2003). Oboe Solo - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1018925 Composed by Benjamin Harry Sajo. 20th Century,Contemporary. Individual part. 4 pages. Benjamin Sajo #6072955. Published by Benjamin Sajo (A0.1018925). Fugue: Wear Pearls and Smile is, on the outset, a fast, rambunctious adventure for many voices playing at the same time. It was conceived as a pairing for the equally vivacious second symphony of Ludwig van Beethoven–his 250th birthday is this year–but can stand on its own as one of my hardest, most challenging works to cook up.This piece is dedicated to those forced to appear positive when internally they’re falling apart. The title is inspired by a quote that’s been with me for a while, Why is it that men can be bastards and women must wear pearls and smile? by Lynn Hecht Schafren, the celebrated American jurist famous for campaigning for gender equity in courts. I’m taking the quote out of its initial context, but the power of that quote, for me, exemplifies how hard it is to maintain a sense of emotional decorum and dignity when you’re authentically a hot mess. And what’s more of a musical hot mess than a fugue? There are two realities to this piece. I’ll quote Dmitri Shostakovich, from his autobiography: The rejoicing is forced, created under threat, […] It’s as if someone were beating you with a stick and saying, ‘Your business is rejoicing, your business is rejoicing,’ and you rise, shaky, and go marching off, muttering ‘Our business is rejoicing, our business is rejoicing.’ On the one hand, it is insincere happiness, cloying perhaps. But the other truth, I’ll quote Oscar Hammerstein II, from The King and I: While shivering in my shoes / I strike a careless pose / And whistle a happy tune / And no one ever knows, / I'm afraid. I forced myself, against all impulses of my current being, to forge happiness. This piece, with its origin being a mental puzzle (fugues are puzzles), it became a construct where I could lift myself up and regain a sense of purpose. Therefore, it is invented–out of a literal need to survive–pure, genuine happiness.Future Performances: If you are interested in performing this work, please e-mail me.ABOUT THE COMPOSER: Benjamin Sajo (b. 1988) is a Canadian composer of contemporary classical music, as well as an educator. Oboe Solo - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.881259 Composed by Gary Powell Nash. Contemporary. Individual part. 13 pages. Gary Powell Nash #5985465. Published by Gary Powell Nash (A0.881259). Nine New York City Miniatures (2020) oboe solo began with Movement 7,  A Million Numbered Streets.  A Million Numbered Streets was originally conceived for a Vox Novus Composers Voice 15 Minutes of Fame call for scores for a one minute oboe solo piece, specifically themed from New York City, New York.  In preparation, Nash discovered nearly 1,000 songs dedicated to NYC. Many of those were titled after numbered streets, hence Nash’s title A Million Numbered Streets. Nash’s creation employs a medium-fast highly syncopated song-like melody, alluding to a restless and busy NYC street. In an attempt to make A Million Numbered Streets more marketable, Nash decided to compose 8 additional miniatures around it.  The 8 complementary miniatures are all approximately 1 minute in length and alternating fast tempo and slow tempo movements.  There are no direct quotes from other songs; however, 3 of the movements are derived from and inspired by New York City related songs.  Movement #4, Downtown Music was inspired by the song Downtown by Tony Hatch (made popular by Petula Clark’s vocals).  Movement #8, Success is based on the song New York, New York by John Kander (best known for Frank Sinatra singing it).  The title Success was inspired by the phrase If I can make it there, I’ll make it anywhere.  Movement #9, Uptown Music is derived from the song Uptown Girl by Billy Joel. In addition, the title Spreading the News for movement 1, as well as that for movement 6, Vagabond Shoes are also phrases from the song New York, New York.
