This is an original work arranged for Clarinet Quintet.  Whilst it can be performed by 4 Clarinets in Bb and a Bass Clarinet, it is intended to maximise tonal variation by scoring for Eb Clarinet, two Bb's, an Alto in Eb and Bass Clarinet.   The work is  designed as a concert or recital opener or closer, at about advanced intermediate level (note - use of a Bb Clarinet for part 1 will slightly increase technical demands).   A convincing performance should be achievable from players at ABRSM grade 6/7 and above.   Like all good ensemble pieces, everyone has plenty to do with a nice balance of energy, drama and pathos.

The Bass Clarinet part in the quintet can be substituted with bass guitar (additional part included), thus allowing the piece to be performed by a clarinet quartet with bass guitar and drums. This massive hit by Roy Orbison and Bill Dees has been carefully arranged for Clarinet Quintet (Clarinet in Eb, 2 Clarinets in Bb, Alto Clarinet in Eb and Bass Clarinet) plus optional percussion.   With school and amateur ensembles in mind, this arrangement is designed for intermediate players and above.  Percussion (Drum Kit or  Cajon) can be added for additional colour if desired, but is not essential for a convincing performance.  The music is faithful in spirit to the original, with everyone having their moments in the spotlight as themes are shared by the players across the ensemble.  The PDF is 22 pages in length (portrait A4) and includes a score and parts plus optional percussion, with additional parts for Clarinet in Bb to allow substitution of the Eb and Alto Clarinets for more flexible ensembles if required. The duration of the piece is about 2.20 minutes.  Look out for other instrumental versions by the same publisher for Saxophone, Wind and Brass Quintets.

I must confess that this is one of my favorite piano works to play and I've always thought that it would make great concert or recital repertoire for small ensembles. This arrangement for Clarinet Quintet (4 clarinets in Bb and bass clarinet) keeps mostly to the original voicing and style, with the melodic elements flowing between different players.   A convincing performance should be well within the grasp of players of advanced intermediate standard and above (about grade 6/7 ABRSM).
