This work evokes a feeling of longing or melancholy which inspired the title. It is important for the mandolin and piano/harp to work together to bring out the melody and it’s variations throughout by approaching each section as it's own entity. This piece is arranged as a sort of theme and variations. It is important for the pianist/harpist to focus on playing a moderately continual rhythm with the arpeggios and for the mandolinist to approach the lines like a vocalist would. “Star-Crossed� would work well in a set in-between more up-tempo works.

On late Autumn evenings, I often notice that the moonlight brings a cool blue glow to the outside air. With this work, I was trying to capture the feeling of walking outside on a crisp late Autumn evening while taking in the beauty of nature. Regarding the mandolin part, feel free to utilize as little or as much tremolo as you would like – suggestions are written in the score.

“The Pines� was composed on mandolin on an early winter day. The original version is for solo mandolin with optional string quartet. This version incorporates a lot of tremolo or “singing mandolin� throughout. It is helpful to practice adjusting the speed of your tremolo for different tempos and time signatures. The music at the end of each half of this work is meant to evoke a choir and bells which give it a more wintery feeling. This version was arranged for piano/harp with mandolin and would work well in a winter holiday set.

This mid-tempo work for Mandolin and Piano features both instruments.  This mandolin and piano version can be categorized as sounding quite contemporary-minimalist, or post-minimalist. The mandolin part takes cues from methods associated with the violin and the guitar. White Dress was composed for and inspired by a dancer friend's solo performance. The main motif is meant to evoke a subtle breeze adding gentle movement to a dancer’s dress. The mandolin and piano/harp should work together to balance the energy of the flowing arpeggios with the operatic crescendos at the end of each section. While the mandolin counter-melody adds some dimension to this piece, it also works for a solo piano performance.
