While Leemans was serving in the Belgian army during World War 1, on a request from his commander he began to write a march, which he did not finish. During World War 2, when the Belgian parachute brigade was formed, he was having dinner with a group of paratroopers and was again asked to compose a march. During one single night Leemans composed this march on themes recalled from his earlier effort. The musical opened on Broadway at the St. James Theatre on March 29, 1951, and starred Gertrude Lawrence as Anna, and a then mostly unknown Yul Brynner as the King. It ran for 1,246 performances and won Tony Awards for Best Musical, Best Actress, Best Featured Actor, Best Scenic Design and Best Costume Design.
