The daily syndicated version premiered in 1984 with Canadian-born Alex Trebek as host and Johnny Gilbert as announcer, (who is still currently in the announcer role). Trebek hosted until his death, with his last episode airing on January 8, 2021, after over 36 years in the role. Several hosts were then auditioned, culminating with the current host Ken Jennings, himself a former contestant.
