Dark Eyes, sometimes known as ‘Black Eyes’, has its roots in both The Ukraine and in Russia. Although it was originally known as a ‘Russian- Romani’ folksong, at the beginning of the Twentieth Century, it achieved a much wider international reputation when Italian-born British composer, Adalgiso Ferraris, published a new version in 1910. It was also later sung and recorded by Al Bowlly in 1939. It has also gained some currency as a jazz tune.

This is very handy for teachers of groups of like instruments. ‘Hava Nagila’ is an integral part of Jewish culture and it is appropriate that this arrangement would be played in the style and with the inflections of, for example, the 'Klezmer' Clarinet tradition. Although there are lyrics, the tune has gained considerable  wider  universal popularity as a dance that moves inexorably to an exciting and  exhausting climax.

This piece is quite long (6.31) but it can be made shorter by omitting the repeats (4.54) or just using the main waltz themes without repeats (2.30) by starting one beat before letter A and finishing at the bar before letter G.

Gold and Silver waltz was composed by Franz Lehar (1870-1948) for Princess Pauline von Metternich’s “Gold and Silver� Ball in January 1902. It has been made popular in recent times by André Rieu and his orchestra.

Immediate success followed in both London and in America, and it was later adapted as a Ballet. There have been many subsequent arrangements of different elements of the Score that invariably include the ’molto sentimento’ Waltz, itself.

The Irish Washerwoman and Garry Owen are both well-known and are written in the typical compound metre. The other two tunes have both become extremely well known in the world at large. Londonderry air also became very known as “Danny Boy� and Galway Bay by Dr Arthur Colahan was recorded by Bing Crosby and subsequently by Irish groups like The Dubliners and The Clancy Brothers.

This arrangement of the traditional Ukrainian New Year's song Shchedryk is probably better known, outside of Ukraine, as the Christmas carol, Carol of the Bells. This version introduces some interesting variations of meter and style. It also includes themes from other popular Christmas carols woven amongst the ever present ostinato, making for a slightly more challenging, but fun, interpretation of the original piece.

This arrangement is for saxophone quartet. Either soprano, alto, tenor and baritone; or two altos, tenor and baritone. This set includes a score and all five parts.

Malcolm Arnold - 2 pieces from Set 1 of English Dances, arranged for saxophone quartet (AATT). Arnold was born in Northampton, Northamptonshire, England in 1921. He not only wrote music for films, but also a great deal of compositions or a more serious nature. He wrote his English Dances (set 1) in 1950 and they became instantly popular. This is a setting for sax quartet of two movements, Mesto, and Allegro. The instrumentation is 2 altos and 2 tenor saxophones by John Gibson. The sample recording is from the 2nd movement.
