Le Tombeau de Couperin is a suite originally for piano, composed between 1914 and 1917. Each of its six movements is dedicated to the memory of friends of the composer who had died fighting in World War 1. Ravel himself was an army driver during the war. Tombeau is a musical term popular in the 17th century meaning a piece written as a memorial. It was Ravel's intention to pay tribute to his friends and pay homage to the sensibilities of the Baroque French keyboard suites, of which Couperin was a master; this is reflected in the six-movement structure of Ravel's piece. This arrangement for SATB Saxophone Quartet includes the Fugue, Forlane and Toccata. The Prelude, Menuet and Rigaudon are available on SMP Press in another arrangement under separate cover. In this, the opera's most famous aria (and one of the most popular works in the soprano repertoire, which many critics agree Maria Callas owned), Butterfly says that one beautiful day, they will see a puff of smoke on the far horizon. Then a ship will appear and enter the harbour. She will not go down to meet him but will wait on the hill for him to come. After a long time, she will see in the far distance a man beginning the walk out of the city and up the hill. When he arrives, he will call Butterfly from a distance, but she will not answer, partly for fun and partly not to die from the excitement of the first meeting. Then he will speak the names he used to call her: Little one. Dear wife. Orange blossom. Butterfly promises Suzuki that this will happen. Cécile Louise Stéphanie Chaminade (8 August 1857 – 13 April 1944) was a French composer and pianist. Born in Paris, she studied at first with her mother, then with Félix Le Couppey on piano, Marie Gabrie Augustin Savard, Martin Pierre Marsick on violin, and Benjamin Godard in music composition, but not officially, since her father disapproved of her musical education. Her teacher, Benjamin Goddard gave her an assignment to complete, a ballet symphonique, Callirhoë, Op. 37 (1888) that enjoyed many performances which added to its success. Movements from this work were extracted and fashioned for solo piano, namely Pas des écharpes, (Scarf Dance) and Pas des amphores, (Amphora Dance), both of which became popular staples of the piano repertory. This arrangement written in 2014 is playable by either SATB or AATB saxophone quartet. The original key has been changed to a more saxophone-friendly key. As the title would suggest, it has a rather sad and melancholic feel. Several events in my personal life of a tragic nature which occurred during the year it was written (2014) have subconsciously contributed to this feeling, including in May 2014 the loss of a friend and colleague, followed in September by the loss of my father-in-law. An ongoing health issue which began in April prevented me from playing and performing to the best of my ability. Thankfully this issue has resolved itself; there is a ray of hope for the future. Pierre Leemans, Dutch: Pieter Leemans, (1897 – 1980) was a Belgian musician and composer. He worked in a variety of genres, including orchestral and choral music, film scores, and songs, but is best known for his marches. The March of the Belgian Paratroopers (Marche des Parachutistes Belges) is especially popular. While Leemans was serving in the Belgian army during World War 1, on a request from his commander he began to write a march, which he did not finish. During World War 2, when the Belgian parachute brigade was formed, he was having dinner with a group of paratroopers and was again asked to compose a march. During one single night Leemans composed this march on themes recalled from his earlier effort. Welsh actor, director, film producer and composer Anthony Hopkins has won many awards in his long career, including two Academy Awards, four BAFTAs, two Emmys and the Cecil B. Demille Award. In 1993 he was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II for his services to the arts. In a 2012 interview, Hopkins stated, I've been composing music all my life and if I'd been clever enough at school, I would like to have gone to music college. As it was, I had to settle for being an actor. His compositions cover a wide range of genres. And The Waltz Goes On dates from 1964 but was not performed until 2011 when André Rieu and his orchestra premiered the piece in Vienna. This arrangement for SATB Saxophone Quartet with optional Double Bass is suitable for a variety of programs and concert settings. Vesti la giubba (Put on the costume) is a famous tenor aria from Ruggero Leoncavallo's 1892 opera I Pagliacci. Vesti la giubba is sung at the conclusion of the first act, when Canio discovers his wife's infidelity, but must nevertheless prepare for his performance as Pagliaccio the clown because The show must go on. The aria is often regarded as one of the most moving in the operatic repertoire of the time. The pain of Canio is portrayed in the aria and exemplifies the entire notion of the tragic clown: smiling on the outside but crying on the inside. This is still displayed today, as the clown motif often features the painted-on tear running down the cheek of the performer. The 1904 recording by Enrico Caruso was the first million-selling record in history. This aria is often used in popular culture and has been featured in many renditions, mentions, and spoofs. In this arrangement for SATB Saxophone Quartet written in 2013, the original key has been transposed to a more saxophone-friendly key. The tenor saxophone is featured.
