Here is a holiday favorite, “What Child Is This?� with an interesting twist. It is arranged in the style of Dave Brubeck’s “Unsquare Dance.� The 7/8 meter keeps performers on their toes and audiences delighted.  Additional parts are included to allow for substitutions and/or different instrumentation needs. The lead can be played on Soprano or Alto. The optional additional Bari part can be used if electric bass is missing or just to add more bass to the ensemble if desired.

Unsquare Dance is an iconic musical piece written by the American jazz composer Dave Brubeck in 1961.Written in 7/4 time, the piece is a typical example of Brubeck's exploration of time signatures. According to Brubeck, it was written during a single trip from his home to the recording studio and was recorded the same day. Based on a blues form, the piece is driven by a strong bass figure, with percussion provided primarily by the rim of the snare drum and hand claps. Unsquare Dance was initially included on the album Time Further Out and even became a hit single, peaking at #74 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100. This arrangement is for SATB Saxophone Quartet, with optional percussion. Dave Brubeck?s iconic composition which featured on his 1959 album ?Time Out?, has been carefully scored for standard saxophone quartet by Jim Fieldhouse.

Brubeck, often regarded as one of the leading artists in the cool jazz movement, was inspired by the sound and rhythmic feel he heard when he encountered a group of Turkish street musicians. Blue Rondo was based upon the Turkish Aksak rhythm, and is written in 9/8 grouped as 2+2+2+3 for three bars followed by a 3+3+3 bar.

In a conversation between Brubeck and these Turkish musicians they reportedly said that the aksak was to them what the blues was to western musicians, and so the title for the piece “Blue Rondo a la Turk” came about.

This arrangement requires attention to detail, rhythmic precision and good dynamic control in order to drive the music forward with a light and lively feel and build to the big moments in the score where the ensemble can really let rip!
