Saxophone quartet Alto Saxophone,Baritone Saxophone,Soprano Saxophone,Tenor Saxophone - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.764652 Composed by Cecile Chaminade. Arranged by James Pybus. 20th Century,Contest,Festival. 26 pages. James Pybus #35431. Published by James Pybus (A0.764652). Cécile Louise Stéphanie Chaminade (8 August 1857 – 13 April 1944) was a French composer and pianist. Born in Paris, she studied at first with her mother, then with Félix Le Couppey on piano, Marie Gabrie Augustin Savard, Martin Pierre Marsick on violin, and Benjamin Godard in music composition, but not officially, since her father disapproved of her musical education. Her teacher, Benjamin Goddard gave her an assignment to complete, a ballet symphonique, Callirhoë, Op. 37 (1888) that enjoyed many performances which added to its success. Movements from this work were extracted and fashioned for solo piano, namely Pas des écharpes, (Scarf Dance) and Pas des amphores, (Amphora Dance), both of which became popular staples of the piano repertory. This arrangement written in 2014 is playable by either SATB or AATB saxophone quartet. The original key has been changed to a more saxophone-friendly key. Thank you to my friend Mr. Freddy Gruenebaum, leader of the Saxophonia Quartet, based in Huntington Beach, California, for suggesting this wonderful composer’s work to me. Duration 4:13 contact me at james.pybus56@gmail.com.

Crazy Little Thing Called Love is a song by the British rock band Queen. Written by Freddie Mercury in 1979, the track is included on their 1980 album The Game, and also appears on the band's compilation album, Greatest Hits in 1981. The song was written as a tribute to Elvis Presley (with influences rockabilly-swing). Having composed Crazy Little Thing Called Love on guitar, Mercury played rhythm guitar while performing the song live, which was the first time he played guitar in concert with Queen. This arrangement for sax quartet (Bb Soprano, Eb Alto, Bb Tenor, Eb Baritone) is suitable for classroom, repertoire and recital.

Woodwind Ensemble,Woodwind Quartet Alto Saxophone,Baritone Saxophone,Soprano Saxophone,Tenor Saxophone - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.568938 Arranged by Thomas Graf. Contemporary. 25 pages. Thomas Graf - the-hit-factory.com #3430243. Published by Thomas Graf - the-hit-factory.com (A0.568938). La Paloma  is a popular Spanish song that has been produced and reinterpreted in diverse cultures, settings, arrangements, and recordings over the last 140 years. The song was composed and written by the Spanish composer from the Basque region Sebastián Iradier (later Yradier) after he visited Cuba in 1861. Iradier may have composed  La Paloma  around 1863, just two years before he died in Spain in obscurity, never to learn how popular his song would become.  La Paloma  belongs to a genre of songs called  Habaneras,  a musical style developed in 19th-century Spain that is still today very much present in the form of folk songs and formal compositions, particularly in the Northern Basque Region and East Coast (Catalonia and Valencia) regions of the country. Like all  Habaneras,  its characteristic and distinct rhythm reflects the fusion of the local Cuban songs that the Spanish sailors of the time brought back with them from their travels to the island, with the rhythm structure of the flamenco tanguillo gaditano (original from Cádiz, Andalusia). Very quickly  La Paloma  became popular outside of Spain, particularly in Mexico, and soon spread around the world. In many places, including Afghanistan, Hawaii, the Philippines, Germany, Romania, Zanzibar, and Goa it gained the status of a quasi-folk song. Over the years the popularity of  La Paloma  has surged and receded periodically, but never subsided. It may be considered one of the first universal popular hits and has appealed to artists of diverse musical backgrounds.[1] There are more than one thousand versions of this song, and that together with  Yesterday  by the Beatles, is one of the most recorded songs in the history of music.  ï»¿Instrumentation:  Soprano (Alto), Alto, Tenor, Baritone           ï»¿ Listen to the recording - a challenge for your ensemble.  Please don't forget to review your purchase - you will help other musicians to choose the perfect arrangement for their ensemble. Saxophone quartet - Grade 3 - Digital Download SKU: DX.129401 Composed by Joseph M. Scriven. Arranged by Dana F. Everson. Sacred instrumental music. Key of F, Ab. Traditional. Score and parts. 11 pages. David E. Smith - Digital Sheet Music #129401. Published by David E. Smith - Digital Sheet Music (DX.129401). Scored for Saxophone quartet (A-A-T-B) with opt. Soprano for first Alto. The introduction starts with the First Alto playing a melodic motif, ever rising to a climatic point and then settling down to the theme- first presented in the First and Tenor parts weaving in and out producing a flowing texture, then joined by the Second Alto and eventually the Baritone. The chorus section of the hymn is a constant weaving of the four parts both harmonically and rhythmically. The next section becomes more active rhythmically adding tension until it settles down into a sweet aura of sound with gentle nudges of harmonic alteration. The final measures give an atmosphere of rest and solace.

Woodwind Ensemble,Woodwind Quartet - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.549860 Composed by Johann Sebastian Bach. Arranged by James M. Guthrie, ASCAP. Baroque,Concert,Easter,Sacred,Wedding. 14 pages. Jmsgu3 #3557041. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.549860). Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme (Awake, the Voice is calling us) from Cantata BWV 140. Duration: ca. 4:00, Score: 10 pages, Program this for church services during the Easter season, weddings, or as a recital encore.Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme (Awake, the Voice is calling us) also known as: Sleepers Awake Bach composed his church cantata Wachet auf (BWV 140) as part of his second annual cantata cycle covering the entire annual church calendar. It is based on the hymn of the same name by Philipp Nicolai (1599). The hymn text covers the readings for the 27th Sunday after Trinity. Bach designed the cantata in seven movements, setting the stanzas in various forms. Among these forms are the chorale fantasia, the chorale prelude, and a four-part chorale. He casts the new lyrics as recitatives – in a manner similar to the opera. Fourth Movement Bach writes the fourth movement, Zion hört die Wächter singen (Zion hears the watchmen singing), in the style of a chorale prelude with the chorale phrases performed as a strict cantus firmus. The phrases seem to enter at times erratically against the famous lyrical melody. The violins play this melody in unison as a foil against the cantus phrases. The violin melody is so independent and complete that when the cantus melody appears it catches the listener at times totally off-guard. Bach later transcribed this movement for organ (BWV 645). This transcription became No. 1 of the Six Schübler Chorales. Bach Overview First of all, Johann Sebastian Bach is maybe the greatest composer in music history. Certainly, he was prolific. As a result, everyone has heard of his works. Furthermore, these works number well over a thousand. It seems like people are probably most familiar with the instrumental works such as the Brandenburg Concertos, and the Goldberg Variations. But, similarly famous are such noteworthy works as the Well-Tempered Clavier, the Musical Offering, and certainly the Art of Fugue. Seems like his most famous vocal works include the most noteworthy Mass in B Minor. Also, most noteworthy, though, are the St. John Passion, and certainly the Christmas Oratorio.  History Bach came from a long line of musicians and above all, composers. Consequently, he, first of all, pursued a career as a church organist. So as a result, he gained employment in various Protestant churches in Germany. For a while, he worked as a court musician in Weimar and Köthen. Here he probably developed his organ style and likewise his chamber music style. Eventually, he, therefore, gained an appointment as Cantor of St. Thomas in Leipzig. Here he worked until difficulties with his employer ultimately drove him away. The King of Poland finally appointed him as court composer.  Style It seems like Bach created a fascinating new international style. He synthesized elements of the most noteworthy European music ideas into his new style. Even more, this new style was probably his synthesis of European musical rhythm and form. Furthermore, he demonstrated a complete mastery of counterpoint and motivic development. His sense of harmonic organization probably propelled him to the top. Revival               Mendelssohn conducted a Bach revival in the nineteenth century. His effort probably helped to re-familiarize the public with the magnitude of Bach’s works. During this period, scholars published many noteworthy Bach biographies. Moreover, Wolfgang Schmieder published the BWV (Bach Werke Verzeichnis). As a result, this is now the official catalog of his entire artistic output. The BWV number allows us to locate a work in the catalog. Sometimes scholars will simply use an S (Schmieder) as an abbreviation for BWV.  Voyager

Elements and is designed to musically portray the essential nature of the Classical Greek elements, fire, water, air and earth and their astrological implications. The first movement is Fire whose essential nature is strong and controlling. The music contains a lot of forceful sections, primarily in a homophonic style. The water element’s chief characteristic is sensitivity, therefore it is in a slow tempo and is lyrical and harmonically rich. The chief characteristic of the air element it is changeable, therefore this movement is filled with contrasts of texture, dynamics, articulation, meter, tonality, and orchestration. This last movement represents the Earth element whose main characteristic is stability. To represent stability musically, a lot of ostinatos were used. This work was commissioned by the h2 quartet in order to perform with a high school orchestra. Several substitute parts are provided. The score prints on legal size paper and the parts on letter.

Arranged by James Pybus. Contest,Festival,Opera,Romantic Period,Wedding. 11 pages. James Pybus #4359253. Published by James Pybus (A0.764693). Un bel dì (One Fine Day) is sung in Act 2 of Puccini's famous 1898 opera Madama Butterfly. In this, the opera's most famous aria (and one of the most popular works in the soprano repertoire, which many critics agree Maria Callas owned), Butterfly says that one beautiful day, they will see a puff of smoke on the far horizon. Then a ship will appear and enter the harbour. She will not go down to meet him but will wait on the hill for him to come. After a long time, she will see in the far distance a man beginning the walk out of the city and up the hill. When he arrives, he will call Butterfly from a distance, but she will not answer, partly for fun and partly not to die from the excitement of the first meeting. Then he will speak the names he used to call her: Little one. Dear wife. Orange blossom. Butterfly promises Suzuki that this will happen. Suzuki departs, as Sharpless and Goro arrive in the garden. This arrangement is playable by either SATB or AATB Saxophone Quartet. The duration is ca. 4:05. During his short lifetime Schubert composed prolifically in many genres.  His original composition of Marche Militaire was for 'four hands' or two Pianos, and all arrangements, including this one, usually present only the first part of the first of three marches that comprise the complete work (Trois Marches Militaire, Op.51).  Among the devices used by Schubert is clever decoration of the opening and closing unison phrases which are suggestive of a bugle call.

Saxophone Quartet,Woodwind Ensemble Alto Saxophone,Baritone Saxophone,Tenor Saxophone - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1257962 Composed by Guillaume de Machaut, 1300-1377. Arranged by James M. Guthrie, ASCAP. Chamber,Contest,Early Music,Festival,Historic,Medieval. 85 pages. Jmsgu3 #851199. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.1257962). 1. Kyrie2. Gloria3. Credo4. Sanctus5. Agnus dei6. Ite missa estGuillaume de Machaut composed the Messe de Nostre Dame, also known as the Mass of Our Lady, in the early 1360s. He wrote the mass for the Cathedral at Reims, where he served as a canon, a permanent clergy member. According to a rubric found at the Cathedral, it would have likely been performed for the Saturday Lady Mass. Guillaume de Machaut's Messe de Nostre Dame is significant in the history of music for several reasons: It is the first complete setting of the Ordinary of the Mass by a single composer that has survived. It is a unified mass, meaning that the composer selected relevant chants for each section as the borrowed tenor. It was composed in four voices, which was unusual at the time. The texts of both Gloria and Credo are quite lengthy, and therefore Machaut set these movements in a style reminiscent of the earlier discant style, having short phrases, similar rhythmic motion in all parts, and a low ratio of notes per syllable of text, both ending with long, rhapsodic sections for the final word, Amen. Machaut's Messe de Nostre Dame is a landmark in musical history, but it is far from being avant-garde merely for the sake of uniqueness. It is considered to be a culmination of the musical style of the Ars Nova period, which was characterized by complex polyphonic textures and rhythmic innovations. The mass is also significant because it was composed during a time of great political and social upheaval in Europe, and it reflects the changing attitudes towards religion and music during this period. Overall, Machaut's Messe de Nostre Dame is a significant work that represents a culmination of the musical style of the Ars Nova period and reflects the changing attitudes towards religion and music during the 14th century. The mass consists of five movements: Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus, and Agnus Dei, followed by the dismissal Ite, missa est. The tenor of the Kyrie is based on Vatican Kyrie IV, the Sanctus, and Agnus correspond to Vatican Mass XVII, and the Ite is on Sanctus VIII. The Gloria and Credo have no apparent chant basis, although they are stylistically related to one another. The mass is a unified mass, meaning that the composer selected relevant chants for each section as the borrowed tenor. The Messe de Nostre Dame is significant in the history of music because it is the first complete setting of the Ordinary of the Mass by a single composer that has survived. It is also significant because it was composed during a time of great political and social upheaval in Europe, and it reflects the changing attitudes towards religion and music during this period. Overall, the Messe de Nostre Dame was an important part of the liturgical practices of the time, and it is still regarded as a masterpiece of medieval music and of all religious music.

Saxophone Quartet,Woodwind Ensemble Alto Saxophone,Baritone Saxophone,Soprano Saxophone,Tenor Saxophone - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1151823 Composed by Frank Loesser. Arranged by James Pybus. Christmas,Holiday,Pop,Standards. 9 pages. James Pybus #752026. Published by James Pybus (A0.1151823). What Are You Doing New Year's Eve? is a popular song written in 1947 by Frank Loesser as an independent song. It was first recorded by Margaret Whiting in 1947 and first charted for The Orioles, peaking at No. 9 on Billboard's Best-Selling Retail Rhythm & Blues chart in December 1949. Although it is typically performed in December, that was not the composer's intent. In A Most Remarkable Fella: Frank Loesser and the Guys and Dolls in His Life, his daughter Susan Loesser explains that the singer, madly in love, is making a (possibly rash) commitment far into the future. (Maybe it's much too early in the game. Ah, but I thought I'd ask you just the same – What are you doing New Year's, New Year's Eve?) It always annoyed my father when the song was sung during the holidays. This SATB Saxophone Quartet arrangement begins with a quote from Dvorak's New World Symphony before proceeding into the rarely included verse of the song and ends with a quote from the popular song Auld Lang Syne written by Robert Burns, which is often heard on New Year's Eve. The saxophone quartet sound is sure to engage audiences in the spirit and sentiment of the song itself. The duration is 4:21. Contact me at james.pybus56@gmail.com.

Arranged by James M. Guthrie. Baroque,Chamber,Contest,Festival,Historic,Standards. 475 pages. Jmsgu3 #1014683. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.1434546). The Partitas, BWV 825-830, are a set of six keyboard suites composed by Johann Sebastian Bach and published in 1731 as his Opus 1, the first of his works to be published under his direction. They were among the last keyboard suites Bach composed, written between 1725 and 1731, after the English and French Suites. Each partita consists of a series of dances, typically opening with a prelude-like movement followed by an Allemande, Courante, Sarabande, and Gigue, with additional dances inserted. The tonalities of the six partitas form an ascending and descending pattern of intervals, starting and ending with keys related to Bach's name (B-flat and B). Bach supervised the publication, initially publishing them separately before compiling them into the 1731 Clavier-Übung collection. Many surviving printed copies contain handwritten annotations, some likely stemming from Bach himself, providing insights into the composer's final intentions. They are among Bach's greatest keyboard works, demonstrating mastery of counterpoint, expression, and the instrument's technical capabilities.  The partitas range widely in character, from the poetic No. 1 in B-flat to the monumental tragic No. 6 in E minor. So, the Partitas represent the culmination of Bach's genius for keyboard composition and his final thoughts on the dance suite genre.YouTube Playlist Link:  https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLT9KtY0S7DRDEAJI68McqwUGB6XPMvGHl.

By Giacomo (Dp) Puccini and Giacomo Puccini. Arranged by James Pybus. Classical,Contemporary,Contest,Festival,Opera. 11 pages. James Pybus #4355799. Published by James Pybus (A0.764694). Nessun dorma (English: None shall sleep) is an aria from act three of Turandot, and is one of the best-known tenor arias in all opera. Luciano Pavarotti made it one of his signature arias. It is sung by Calaf, il principe ignoto (the unknown prince), who falls in love at first sight with the beautiful but cold Princess Turandot. However, any man who wishes to wed Turandot must first answer her three riddles; if he fails, he will be beheaded. This arrangement for saxophones can be played by either SATB or AATB quartet, with an optional Bass saxophone part which doubles the Baritone part. I would like to believe that Puccini would have approved of this adaptation of what is perhaps his most recognizable aria since the original orchestration for Turandot calls for a very large orchestra that includes two on-stage Alto Saxophones. Saxophone Quartet,Woodwind Ensemble - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.755222 Composed by Sy Brandon. 20th Century,Contemporary. 95 pages. Sy Brandon #3418983. Published by Sy Brandon (A0.755222). Divertimento is in three movements. The first movement Frolic has three main thematic ideas. The first contains dotted rhythms, staccato articulation, and meter change. The second thematic idea is related to the first in that it also uses dotted rhythms and meter change, but is more legato and begins with more sustained notes. The third thematic section is thinner in texture, more playful, and has a legato theme over a staccato background. The motivic material in each of these sections has similarities. Contrast is primarily obtained through change of style and mood. These thematic ideas develop throughout the movement by varying key, instrumentation, and melodic material. There are several sections of imitation that are very energetic. The second movement Ballad is lyrical at an Andante tempo. The form of the movement is through-composed as the motives develop into new variations instead of having clearly distinguished themes. There is however a recapitulation that brings the listen back to the opening material. The main motives that develop are a sixteenth note pattern that is arpeggiated and also stepwise, a dotted quarter and eighth note idea that is often on weak beats as well as appearing on strong beats, and scalewise eighth note lines. All of these interweave among the parts with frequent counterpoint and some imitation. The harmony is lush with seventh chords used frequently. The last movement Tarantella is in a lively tempo. The form of this movement is a large ABA(Scherzo, Trio, Scherzo). The A sections are in triple meter while the B section is in duple. The A section is in three parts, forming an ABA within the large A. The material for the first part is motivically derived. The first motive is a dotted eighth, sixteenth, eighth note followed by even eighth notes. The second motive is four chromatic sixteenth notes followed by an eighth note. This motive appears both ascending and descending. The B section within this large A consists of a slurred melodic line that has both stepwise motion and leaps. It is accompanied by staccato chromatic eighth notes. The large B section is folksong-like and is in a recognizable binary form that repeats in a new key. The large A serves as a recapitulation of the opening section and it ends lightly and playfully in keeping with the Divertimento title that means to divert or amuse.

Published by Forton Music - Digital (F2.FM458). ISBN 9790570483570.For SATB Saxophone Quartet, 'Mercy' is an obsessively expressive Adagio (so to say, a Samuel Barber's equivalent for woodwinds) with a homophonic texture, like a four part chorale. Rhythmically, this piece offers no problems. While the first part requires more experienced players, parts 2, 3 and 4 are relatively easy to play. Most groups would be able to master this piece after only a couple of rehearsals. Some would say that mercy is a virtue, others (following Nietzsche) that it is a weakness. Do not seek in this piece a one-to-one musical transcription of merciful feelings, but rather concentrate on the smoothness and tender sound quality associated with it. Rather than 'pity', mercy is about empathy, togetherness and support - this attitude can also show while performing music.
