Gustav Theodore Holst was an English composer, arranger and teacher. Best known for his orchestral suite The Planets, he composed many other works across a range of genres, but was particularly interested in unaccompanied choral works.  These three Welsh folksongs were originally for mixed choir, and have been adapted here for saxophone quartet.  Short and lyrical, these three folksongs can be easily inserted into a concert programme, either individually or as a whole.

Charles Stanford arranged these six Irish folksongs for chorus in 1901. They are very well suited for a woodwind ensemble and here they are set for sax quartet by John Gibson. The six pieces run about 9 minutes total. This setting is for 2 altos, tenor, and baritone saxophones.

This waltz has a lovely major / minor folksongy feel to the first theme with a contrasting answer in the major key, which is all repeated. For the middle section we have a gentle melody in the major key, again repeated. The original melody returns, and the piece finishes on a thoughtful reference to the gentle middle section.

Carol is the second song in this set of eight. It was composed for orchestra and arranged here soprano, alto, tenor and bari saxes. It may be performed as a quartet or ensemble. This is an incredible movement from the suite. The chromaticism in the harmony coupled with the lightness of the melody makes this enjoyable for both the audience and the performers. She's Like the Swallow was first collected in1930 by the British folksong collector Maud Karpeles. The elusive tune was so beautiful, that she felt it must have come from Britain, but today, we recognize She's Like the Swallow as a Newfoundland folksong. Serenade for wind instruments, cello and double bass in D minor, Op. 44, B. 77, is a chamber composition by the Czech composer Antonín Dvořák. The Serenade evokes the old-world atmosphere of musical performances at the castles of the Rococo period, where the worlds of the aristocracy and the common folk merged. It is composed in a 'Slavonic' style (shortly before the Slavonic Dances), though not quoting folksong directly.

Dark Eyes, sometimes known as ‘Black Eyes’, has its roots in both The Ukraine and in Russia. Although it was originally known as a ‘Russian- Romani’ folksong, at the beginning of the Twentieth Century, it achieved a much wider international reputation when Italian-born British composer, Adalgiso Ferraris, published a new version in 1910. It was also later sung and recorded by Al Bowlly in 1939. It has also gained some currency as a jazz tune.

This arrangement of Railway Song is one of a series of jolly and descriptive quartets (and a septet) all based on the Swabian folksong Auf de schwäb'sche Eisebahne (= on the Swabian railway) from the Tübinger Kommersbuch 1853 The music in this arrangement also mimics the speeding up and slowing down of the train and its whistles.
