The BBC sitcom 'Fawlty Towers', written and starring John Cleese and Connie Booth and set in a sea-side hotel in Torquay featured a cast of misfit stereotypes, boiuncing from one disaster to another. To introduce this Dennis Wilson (1920 - 1989) produced a gentle 'Palm Court Orchestra' theme for string quartet, echoing Beethoven and Boccherini and even Mozart's  Diverimento for two horns and sting quartet (K522) otherwise known as 'The Musical Joke'. The main theme leads to a much faster 6/8 section in which the melody is varied and distorted melodically and harmonically before the main theme reoccurs. The music concludes with a rather forced coda.

This arrangement is for Saxophone Quartet , Soprano Sax, Alto Sax, Tenor Sax and Baritone Sax. A version is also available for mixed woodwind ensemble.

Elements and is designed to musically portray the essential nature of the Classical Greek elements, fire, water, air and earth and their astrological implications. The first movement is Fire whose essential nature is strong and controlling. The music contains a lot of forceful sections, primarily in a homophonic style. The water element’s chief characteristic is sensitivity, therefore it is in a slow tempo and is lyrical and harmonically rich. The chief characteristic of the air element it is changeable, therefore this movement is filled with contrasts of texture, dynamics, articulation, meter, tonality, and orchestration. This last movement represents the Earth element whose main characteristic is stability. To represent stability musically, a lot of ostinatos were used. This work was commissioned by the h2 quartet in order to perform with a high school orchestra. Several substitute parts are provided. The score prints on legal size paper and the parts on letter.

Funk in the box is a 5 movement work for saxophone quartet. The work features Alto and Bari solo movements (with foot stomps), two full quartet movements and 1 one TTB (ATB optional) trio movement. The rhythms are funky throughout and the textures range from typical soli-16th style writing to more minimalist and aleatoric passages. Harmonically, chord progressions are ocassionally implied however the embellishments give the entire a free, almost atonal post-jazz feel. It is suggested that this work be broken down into its individual movements. Thus giving the ensemble the opportunity to practice and perform the individual movements in a modular performance setting, in addition to presenting the entire work. I composed this work in 2005 as my Master's Thesis while attending the College Conservatory of Music at the University of Cincinnati. I appreciate your interest in this work. - Michael Mollo.

Gabriel Fauré (1845 – 1924) was a French composer, organist, pianist and teacher. He was one of the foremost French composers of his generation, and his musical style influenced many 20th-century composers. Among his best-known works are his Pavane, Requiem, Sicilienne, nocturnes for piano and the songs Après un rêve and Clair de lune. Although his best-known and most accessible compositions are generally his earlier ones, Fauré composed many of his most highly regarded works in his later years, in a more harmonically and melodically complex style.
