Le Tombeau de Couperin is a suite originally for piano, composed between 1914 and 1917. Each of its six movements is dedicated to the memory of friends of the composer who had died fighting in World War 1. Ravel himself was an army driver during the war. Tombeau is a musical term popular in the 17th century meaning a piece written as a memorial. It was Ravel's intention to pay tribute to his friends and pay homage to the sensibilities of the Baroque French keyboard suites, of which Couperin was a master; this is reflected in the six-movement structure of Ravel's piece. This arrangement for SATB Saxophone Quartet includes the Fugue, Forlane and Toccata. The Prelude, Menuet and Rigaudon are available on SMP Press in another arrangement under separate cover. I fell in love with the chord progressions, the syncopation, and the time signature changes from 4/4 to 3/4 to 6/8. Little did I know until I got to the end of the arrangement that this song takes lyrics from the Heaven's Gate Cult Manifesto. I said, so what. This is really a great tune.
