Saxophone Quartet,Woodwind Ensemble - Level 3 - Digital Download

SKU: A0.1081909

Composed by Johannes Brahms. Arranged by Richard E Brown. Contest,Festival,Romantic Period,Standards. 12 pages. Dacker Music #686041. Published by Dacker Music (A0.1081909).

An arrangement for saxophone quartet of the Waltz in Ab (Op. 39, No. 15), one of the best-known piano pieces by the great German Romantic composer Johannes Brahms (1833-1897). While it is just one in a set of 16 short waltzes for piano that Brahms penned in 1865, it has long taken on a life of its own, eclipsing all of the others in popularity. The set was originally written for piano 4-hands, then arranged by Brahms for solo piano the same year. Grade 3+ - Duration 1:45.

Composed by Johannes Brahms. Arranged by Iván Sánchez Iglesias. Romantic Period,Standards,World. 25 pages. Sanchez Music #5045533. Published by Sanchez Music (A0.997142).

Saxophone Quintet transcription of the third movement of the String Quintet N. 2 by J.Brahms (aprox. 5 minutes)

In this transcription I have tried to stay as true as possible to the original material provided by Brahms. Playing around with the Soprano, Altos and Tenor to reproduce the colors offered by the 2 violins and 2 violas of the original.

The music has a pastoral and light character, combined with the use of long lines. Even though the melody is very defined the rest of the members are not just accompainment, but equally important.

Orchestration:
1 Sopranos
2 Altos
1 Tenor
1 Baritone

Composed by Johannes Brahms. Arranged by James M. Guthrie. 19th Century,Chamber,Contest,Festival,Historic,Romantic Period. 17 pages. Jmsgu3 #998509. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.1416919).

The Fugue in A-flat minor, WoO 8, is one of the early organ works by Brahms, composed around 1856-57. It is an intense, brooding fugue published without an opus number. The fugue is part of a small set of four early organ pieces by Brahms, including the chorale prelude and fugue O Traurigkeit, o Herzeleid (WoO 7). These early organ works demonstrate Brahms' mastery of counterpoint at a young age. While Brahms did not have a close personal relationship with the organ, the genre of the chorale prelude allowed him to pay homage to his musical heritage, following the conventions of the form by paraphrasing and elaborating on pre-existing Lutheran chorale melodies. The Fugue in A-flat minor is considered one of the most significant and high-quality of Brahms' early organ works. It was eventually assigned the posthumous opus number 122, which is still known today. So, in summary, the Fugue in A-flat minor is an essential early organ work by Brahms that demonstrates his mastery of counterpoint, even though the organ was not his primary instrument. It is considered a significant and high-quality piece within Brahms' overall organ output.

Brahms's Prelude and Fugue in A Minor was composed in 1856 when Brahms was intensively studying counterpoint and the organ. The work consists of a prelude and a fugue, a common form for organ compositions at the time. This structure allowed Brahms to showcase his mastery of free-flowing, improvisatory writing and strict contrapuntal techniques. The fugue subject features a distinctive head motive of two punctuating chords, a unifying device throughout the movement. Brahms incorporates fugal procedures not just in the fugue section but also in the transitional and developmental sections of the work, blending fugal and sonata-form elements. This foreshadows his later compositions' sophisticated integration of counterpoint and large-scale form. The Prelude and Fugue WoO 9 is an important early example of Brahms's organ works, which frame his entire compositional output. It demonstrates his mastery of the organ medium and his development as a composer during this formative period.

Composed by Johannes Brahms. Arranged by James M. Guthrie. 19th Century,Chamber,Contest,Festival,Historic,Romantic Period. 9 pages. Jmsgu3 #998049. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.1416369).

Brahms composed this short piano piece in 1853, when he was around 20 years old, as a contribution to a guest album. It was recently rediscovered and published in an Urtext edition. The piece has a pastoral, four-bar central theme featuring parallel thirds in the hands, giving it an orchestral character. The B section becomes more transparent, with the parallel thirds disappearing. Brahms later reused the theme of the Albumblatt in the Trio section of the Scherzo movement of his Horn Trio Op. 40, composed around 12 years later. This reworking shows the composer expanding on his original idea and making it richer and more satisfying in his mature work. The Albumblatt is considered an early, relatively simple composition compared to Brahms' three piano sonatas written that same year. However, it is still a valuable example of the young composer's genius. The main editorial issue is the unexpected piano marking in measure 47, which seems out of place for achieving a melodic climax and may have been a mistake by Brahms.
