It was first recorded by Margaret Whiting in 1947 and first charted for The Orioles, peaking at No. 9 on Billboard's Best-Selling Retail Rhythm & Blues chart in December 1949. Although it is typically performed in December, that was not the composer's intent. However it has become one of the most requested songs at their live concerts. Robert Lamm once said he wrote this song as an attempt to create a song that had no rhymes. I think he succeeded. This arrangement is in the original key from their first album The Chicago Transit Authority. The trombone and trumpet solos are included in the arrangement.
