Andante)Elfrida Andrée (1841-1929) was a Swedish composer and an activist in the Swedish women's movement. She composed a number of chamber pieces which included string quartets, piano trios, violin and piano sonatas and was one of the first female organists officially appointed in Scandanavia. This particular piano trio from 1894 lends itself beautifully to the tambres found in a saxophone quartet and is sure to delight your audience.

Franck's Andantino in Ab (Pièces posthumes, No.33) - CFF 86This very sweet and lyrical melody originally written for organ (ca. 1858) sounds even warmer and more melodic played by string quartet or sax quartet.  Your audience will be rocking back and forth in their seats and smiling as they hum along with the gorgeous melody.While not a technically difficult piece, the song requires good blend and balance, and the lead part's range is somewhat challenging (playing to low Bb on the soprano or altissimo G on alto, sub for soprano).  I've also written an alternate alto sub part without altissimo notes for a more intermediate level quartet.The audio file is AATB, and starts at rehearsal letter E and plays to the end of the piece.

Lullaby was written in 1919 while Gershwin was studying harmony and counterpoint with Edward Kilenyi Sr. He was constantly seeking to expand his knowledge and refine his technique. He used the opening theme of the Lullaby as part of an aria in his unsuccessful one-act opera of 1922, Blue Monday. Though the stage work was a failure, hearing the work caused Paul Whitman to commission a work for his upcoming Aeolean Hall concert. This work turned out to be Rhapsody in Blue. This arrangement for SATB Saxophone Quartet of Lullaby for String Quartet has been made more saxophone-friendly by lowering the keys and making certain register changes. Eternal Father, Strong to Save is a British hymn traditionally associated with seafarers, and was first written in 1860 by William Whiting (1825—1878), an Anglican churchman from Winchester. According to his recount, Whiting grew up near the ocean and, at the age of thirty-five, had felt his life spared by God when a violent storm nearly claimed the ship he was travelling on. This instilled in him a belief in God's command over the rage and calm of the sea. The music associated with it was written by John B. Dykes (1823—1876), another Anglican clergymen and composer of the music for nearly three hundred hymns. This edition comes in several arrangements for multiple ensembles. At the moment of the first edition it contains the original choir version (with the 1861 lyrics), a voice and piano version, and arrangements for string, cello, trombone, horn, woodwind, brass, and saxophone quartets.
