When I heard the news, I just had to do this arrangement. At this time (March 2022) the Ukraine is in a battle with invading Russia. The news reported that the Ukraine Army plays this song over the loud speakers in battle. So, this is in honor of those fighting. In the original key from Twisted Sister's Stay Hungry LP. 1 Octave Scale Studies in 15+ keys for 4-part ensembles of like or mixed instruments

If this is your first exposure to these scale studies, you are in for a treat! Donuts, if you make a mistake!

The initial incarnation of these studies were written for trombone quartet and we would play them in the Tennessee Tech Trombone Choir with the challenge that whomever made the first mistake had to buy donuts for the rest of the ensemble. Since then I have brought that version to several clinics and warm up sessions. One time before I got to explain the title, a fellow trombone professor said, Oh, I get it! Don’t step in the holes!

I only wish I had thought of that myself... Since we have one of the best donut shops in TN here in Cookeville, treating the studio to sugar coated goodies was always my intent.

As with those initial exercises, you can vary these as much as you’d like.

·     Choose a tempo.

·     Choose a dynamic.

·     Choose an articulation/style.

One way I like to play these is to have one person be the model, playing the entire scale over and over while everyone else plays the fragmented versions. That helps everyone to keep on track and stay in time. Double or triple up the parts for ensemble cohesion with a larger group.

Practice one key, gradually speeding it up to improve fluidity, or choose a variation and take it through all keys, playing version A, B, C, or D then skipping to play the same set in a new key.

If you want an additional challenge, play them in different octaves or change the key. Play the F Major set in f minor (all forms), different modes, etc. Players really have to be on their toes to remember if they are playing melodic minor in the ascending or descending form! For jazz players, try swinging them in dorian or mixolydian modes.

The variations are endless!

If you are using these with transposing instruments, 1) is F Major in Concert Pitch, 2) is Bb Major in Concert pitch, and so on. When you reach a scale that is enharmonic for another key (Db/C#, Gb/F#, or Cb/B), they are presented in both keys for each instrument so Trumpets can play in Eb while the Flutes are playing in C# with similar examples for all keys.

All Donut Etudes with the same volume number are compatible so you can play them in mixed quartets or large ensembles with one or more instruments/people on part 1 and a different instrument on part 2, etc. Since the quartets are all identical, conductors/coaches can use any of the scores to tell which part should be playing at what time. Once you have played a scale with one set of parts, everyone can rotate to a different part and play the same scales again!

Enjoy!

By The Beatles. By George Harrison, John Lennon, Paul McCartney, and Richard Starkey. Arranged by Ray Thompson. 21st Century,Pop. 10 pages. RayThompsonMusic #1011457. Published by RayThompsonMusic (A0.1430950).

Now and Then is a song by the English rock band the Beatles, released on 2 November 2023. Dubbed the last Beatles song, it appeared on a double A-side single, paired with a new stereo remix of the band's first single, Love Me Do (1962), with the two serving as bookends to the band's history.

Now and Then is a psychedelic soft rock balladthat John Lennon wrote and recorded around 1977 as a solo home demo but left unfinished.

After Lennon's death in 1980, the song was considered as a potential third Beatles reunion single for their 1995–1996 retrospective project The Beatles Anthology, following Free as a Bird and Real Love, both based on two other Lennon demos of the same names.

Instead, it was shelved for nearly three decades, until it was completed by his surviving bandmates Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr, using overdubs and guitar tracks by George Harrison (who died in 2001) from the abandoned 1995 sessions.

Arranged here for sax quartet, the sopano sax takes most of the melody.

SKU: A0.1277736

Composed by William Ross (1762-1791). Arranged by James Pybus. Celtic,Chamber,Folk,Irish,Multicultural,Wedding,World. 18 pages. James Pybus #869418. Published by James Pybus (A0.1277736).

The Skye Boat Song is a late 19th-century Scottish song adaptation of a Gaelic song composed c.1782 by William Ross, entitled Cuachag nan Craobh (Cuckoo of the Tree). In the original song, the composer laments to a cuckoo that his unrequited love, Lady Marion Ross, is rejecting him. The 19th-century English lyrics instead evoked the journey of Prince Charles Edward Stuart (Bonnie Prince Charlie) from Benbecula to the Isle of Skye as he evaded capture by government soldiers after his defeat at the Battle of Culloden in 1746. It is often played as a slow lullaby or waltz. It entered the modern folk canon in the twentieth century with versions by Paul Robeson, Tom Jones, Rod Stewart, Roger Whittaker, Tori Amos, and many others. Bear McCreary adapted the song as the opening theme music of the 2014 TV series Outlander, sung by Raya Yarbrough, changing the text of Robert Louis Stevenson's poem Sing Me a Song of a Lad That Is Gone (1892) to Lass to fit the story.
This arrangement for SATB or AATB Saxophone Quartet is suitable for a wide variety of performance and concert settings. The duration is 4:13. Contact me at james.pybus56@gmail.com.

Composed by Johann Sebastian Bach. Arranged by Paul Wehage. Baroque,Concert,Standards. 242 pages. Musik Fabrik Music Publishing #3368447. Published by Musik Fabrik Music Publishing (A0.534350).

The Art of the Fugue is considered to be one of the greatest musical creations ever
undertaken. A series of fourteen fugues (last of which is not complete) and four canons
which are all based on the same d minor theme would perhaps seem, at first glance, to be a
pendantic academic exercise. However, in the hands of a composer such as Bach, the
monothematic material is magnified through repetion which creates a sound universe which
is all it’s own.

The work is also shrouded in mystery, as there are no tempo indications in the manuscript,
no indications of the instrumentation which Bach intended and no clear indication as to the
order of the movements. An ordering was given to the work after the composer’s death by
the composer’s son, C. P. E. BACH which attempted to underline the pedogogical aspects of
the composition (as a sort of a textbook for studying fugues and counterpoint). The order
used in this arrangement respects this ordering as it was given by Bach’s heirs. It would
seem probable however, that this order was not that intended by Bach.

The editor hopes that this new version of the Art of the Fugue will be useful in allowing
Saxophonists everywhere to perform this great work. For those who might have scruples
about performing this work on the saxophone, it is best to follow the example of our pianist
friends, who perform this work and others on an instrument that Bach himself said that he
disliked.

Composed by Adam Grim. Concert,Contemporary,Standards. 111 pages. Adam B. Grim #6196935. Published by Adam B. Grim (A0.939376).

Satellite to Planet Nine is a saxophone quartet inspired by the cosmos surrounding planet Earth. The opening movement, Takeoff, is about the mystery and fear surrounding a possibility of another planet - or black hole - yet to be discovered and the beginning of the journey to find it. The second movement, Hymn for the Moon is dedicated to the closest body of natural rock in our solar system. This movement features the tenor saxophone using a mix of disjunct melodies, smooth jazz, and thick chords to produce a movement of both mysticism and peace as the rocket travels by it. Soca for Saturn is the following movement and is inspired by the Trinidadian popular music known as soca. It is the spark of joy and pure energy that holds the astronauts together as they hold their hopes high traveling to a land that might not even exist at all. The fourth movement depicts the first amount of struggle for the team, Solar Flares, which batter and beat at the crew as they try to find a way through. In the movement the mood is instantly changed with the realization that it is too calm, and soon, meet the purest form of heat and energy. Movement five continues the struggle, but this time with hasty success. Arrival continues where the fourth movement leaves off, but finally they see something in the distance – the planet they have been looking for. They prepare for landing, but with their equipment being nearly destroyed from the solar flares it is not smooth landing. In the final movement, New Gravity, the team ventures out into the new world, which is dark and barren. They feel a disturbing presence around them, and as they search further and further into the cold and dusty landscape, they realize what they are up against – survival. Using what they know, they build on their wreckage and create a new home - The Satellite to Planet Nine.
