La Paloma  is a popular Spanish song that has been produced and reinterpreted in diverse cultures, settings, arrangements, and recordings over the last 140 years. The song was composed and written by the Spanish composer from the Basque region Sebastián Iradier (later Yradier) after he visited Cuba in 1861. Iradier may have composed  La Paloma  around 1863, just two years before he died in Spain in obscurity, never to learn how popular his song would become.  La Paloma  belongs to a genre of songs called  Habaneras,  a musical style developed in 19th-century Spain that is still today very much present in the form of folk songs and formal compositions, particularly in the Northern Basque Region and East Coast (Catalonia and Valencia) regions of the country. Like all  Habaneras,  its characteristic and distinct rhythm reflects the fusion of the local Cuban songs that the Spanish sailors of the time brought back with them from their travels to the island, with the rhythm structure of the flamenco tanguillo gaditano (original from Cádiz, Andalusia). Very quickly  La Paloma  became popular outside of Spain, particularly in Mexico, and soon spread around the world. In many places, including Afghanistan, Hawaii, the Philippines, Germany, Romania, Zanzibar, and Goa it gained the status of a quasi-folk song. Over the years the popularity of  La Paloma  has surged and receded periodically, but never subsided. As the title would suggest, it has a rather sad and melancholic feel. Several events in my personal life of a tragic nature which occurred during the year it was written (2014) have subconsciously contributed to this feeling, including in May 2014 the loss of a friend and colleague, followed in September by the loss of my father-in-law. An ongoing health issue which began in April prevented me from playing and performing to the best of my ability. Thankfully this issue has resolved itself; there is a ray of hope for the future. Blue Rondo was based upon the Turkish Aksak rhythm, and is written in 9/8 grouped as 2+2+2+3 for three bars followed by a 3+3+3 bar.In a conversation between Brubeck and these Turkish musicians they reportedly said that the aksak was to them what the blues was to western musicians, and so the title for the piece “Blue Rondo a la Turk” came about.This arrangement requires attention to detail, rhythmic precision and good dynamic control in order to drive the music forward with a light and lively feel and build to the big moments in the score where the ensemble can really let rip!

The aria is a favourite show piece of a spinto soprano, especially ones who specialize in the Italian idiom of verismo. In the opera, the aria is placed in the third act. It is sung by the soprano character Maddalena di Coigny. At this point in the opera, Maddalena, daughter of a noble family, is telling Gérard, one of the rivals for her love, how she has been orphaned when her mother was killed protecting her during the turmoil of the French Revolution. In the famous Opera Scene from the 1993 film Philadelphia, the protagonist, played by Tom Hanks, translates into English the words of Maria Callas’ 1955 recording, in Italian, of La mamma morta. This arrangement is for SATB or AATB Saxophone Quartet, with an optional Bass Saxophone part which doubles the Baritone.
