Saxophone Quartet,Woodwind Ensemble Alto Saxophone,Baritone Saxophone,Soprano Saxophone,Tenor Saxophone - Level 3 - Digital Download

SKU: A0.1281099

By The Max Quartet. By Traditional: New Zealand Sea Shanty. Arranged by David Larsen. 19th Century,Chamber,Folk,Multicultural,Pop,World. 11 pages. David William Larsen #872420. Published by David William Larsen (A0.1281099).

The Wellerman sea shanty was a song written by New Zealand whalers about their trials in daily life. The lyrics talk about having to work hard and wait for provisions brought to them by the “Wellermanâ€, a ship coming from the Weller Brothers trading company. This arrangement for saxophone quartet is easily playable by middle and high school groups. In the concert key of Eb. This piece is lively and bouncy and should be played with mostly short eighth notes. Play out the accents and really make this piece pop. The optional repeat and drum parts just add to the fun.

Written for the Max Quartet.

Composed by Anon. Arranged by Robert Luke Thompson. Christian,Christmas,Holiday,Renaissance,Traditional. 12 pages. Monkspath Music #725261. Published by Monkspath Music (A0.1124512).

Gaudete! is Christmas carol, believed to originate from the 16th Century. It was published widely in 1582 in the collection of sacred songs known as Piae Cantiones.

Whilst the plainchant for the refrain (Gaudete) is clearly published, there is much debate as to where the melody for the verses came from.

To preserve the plainchant style of the verses, each member of the quartet has a solo verse – with a few alterations made to preserve each instrument’s unique voice.

An additional refrain is included to create a suitable crescendo towards the climax of the piece – highlighting the meaning of Gaudete! (Rejoice!)

This version is suitable for quartets of any level, especially those who desire an easily legible and flexible arrangement, ready for a Christmas concert, carol service, or other event.

Composed by Paul Marshall. Contemporary. 51 pages. Sindel-Marshall Music Studio #2968775. Published by Sindel-Marshall Music Studio (A0.962170).

Four movements for saxophone quartet. The first, Azure, takes inspiration from calm waters and open skies - it is in 5/8 and gently flows upon a syncopated pedal point.  The second is Lilac, dream like accompaniment figures are contrasted with a more energetic melodic line.  Chartreuse us the the third, quirky in nature and more lively and energetic.  The quartet finishes with Indigo, brooding and dramatic in 11/8, this is the climax of the quartet. Total performance time is 12-15 minutes.

By Hugh Levey. By Gustav Holst. Arranged by Hugh Levey. 20th Century,Advent,Chamber,Christmas,Religious. 15 pages. Woodwindly.com #901978. Published by woodwindly.com (A0.1313145).

Saxophone Quartet (SATB or AATB)

In the Bleak Mid-Winter is a popular Christmas Carol which has been set to music by both Gustav Holst and Harold Darke. This sax quartet arrangement is based on the Holst version and combines the composer's beautifully simple harmony with the arranger's own counter-melodies and intricate wind writing. Lovely writing for all instruments. An ideal work for Christmas concert programming.

This is a through-composed instrumental arrangement that explores the melody and harmonies of the Holst hymn in 3 differently arranged verses. After a short introduction the first verse uses Holst’s original 4-part harmonisation in its beautiful simplicity, with soprano saxophone playing the melodic line. In verse 2, the tenor sax presents the tune in a lower register while the baritone plays a Baroque style ‘walking bass’. The sopranoe and alto weave countermelodies above them, introducing new material for a Pachelbel-like interlude of an ascending sequence - bringing the music to a climax before subsiding into verse 3. Here a slightly ornamented version of the tune returns with the new material continuing in the bass line. After another smaller climax we return to the original Holst as the work ends quietly and thoughtfully.

Composed by Johannes Brahms. Arranged by James M. Guthrie. 19th Century,Chamber,Contest,Festival,Historic,Romantic Period. 9 pages. Jmsgu3 #998049. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.1416369).

Brahms composed this short piano piece in 1853, when he was around 20 years old, as a contribution to a guest album. It was recently rediscovered and published in an Urtext edition. The piece has a pastoral, four-bar central theme featuring parallel thirds in the hands, giving it an orchestral character. The B section becomes more transparent, with the parallel thirds disappearing. Brahms later reused the theme of the Albumblatt in the Trio section of the Scherzo movement of his Horn Trio Op. 40, composed around 12 years later. This reworking shows the composer expanding on his original idea and making it richer and more satisfying in his mature work. The Albumblatt is considered an early, relatively simple composition compared to Brahms' three piano sonatas written that same year. However, it is still a valuable example of the young composer's genius. The main editorial issue is the unexpected piano marking in measure 47, which seems out of place for achieving a melodic climax and may have been a mistake by Brahms.

Composed by Traditional. Arranged by BRIAN W. COPPING. Folk,Hanukkah,Jewish,Traditional. 12 pages. EMK Music #939032. Published by EMK Music (A0.1354318).

Scored for 2 Altos, Tenor and Baritone Saxophones, there are also Alternative Parts 3 and 4 for Altos so it can be played by 4 Altos. This is very handy for teachers of groups of like instruments. ‘Hava Nagila’ is an integral part of Jewish culture and it is appropriate that this arrangement would be played in the style and with the inflections of, for example, the 'Klezmer' Clarinet tradition. Although there are lyrics, the tune has gained considerable  wider  universal popularity as a dance that moves inexorably to an exciting and  exhausting climax.

Tara's Theme, the famous theme tune from Gone With the Wind (1939) is arranged here for saxophone quartet.  It is also known by My Own True Love when it was set to words by Mack David 15 years later.
This arrangement is perfect for weddings or any celebration of love. The length is under 3 mins so is short enough for the entrance of the bride or it could be repeated if a longer piece is needed eg register signing etc.

Composed by Kurt Weill and Maxwell Anderson. Arranged by Cindy Cross. Broadway,Jazz,Musical/Show,Pop,Standards. 20 pages. Cindy M. Cross #1052668. Published by Cindy M. Cross (A0.1475083).

This, my first saxophone quartet, is a beautiful melody with rich harmonies. This arrangement gives everyone a chance to play  the melody with creative background parts that go beyond your basic chord movement. The piece can be extended by choosing to repeat and give musicians improvisational solos. Play it faster, play it slower, make it simple, or jazz it up even more. Designed to be flexible and work for your individual ensemble.
