Saxophone Quartet,Woodwind Ensemble Alto Saxophone,Baritone Saxophone,Soprano Saxophone,Tenor Saxophone - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1277736 Composed by William Ross (1762-1791). Arranged by James Pybus. Celtic,Chamber,Folk,Irish,Multicultural,Wedding,World. 18 pages. James Pybus #869418. Published by James Pybus (A0.1277736). The Skye Boat Song is a late 19th-century Scottish song adaptation of a Gaelic song composed c.1782 by William Ross, entitled Cuachag nan Craobh (Cuckoo of the Tree). In the original song, the composer laments to a cuckoo that his unrequited love, Lady Marion Ross, is rejecting him. The 19th-century English lyrics instead evoked the journey of Prince Charles Edward Stuart (Bonnie Prince Charlie) from Benbecula to the Isle of Skye as he evaded capture by government soldiers after his defeat at the Battle of Culloden in 1746. It is often played as a slow lullaby or waltz. It entered the modern folk canon in the twentieth century with versions by Paul Robeson, Tom Jones, Rod Stewart, Roger Whittaker, Tori Amos, and many others. Bear McCreary adapted the song as the opening theme music of the 2014 TV series Outlander, sung by Raya Yarbrough, changing the text of Robert Louis Stevenson's poem Sing Me a Song of a Lad That Is Gone (1892) to Lass to fit the story. This arrangement for SATB or AATB Saxophone Quartet is suitable for a wide variety of performance and concert settings. The duration is 4:13. Contact me at james.pybus56@gmail.com.

Saxophone Quartet,Woodwind Ensemble Alto Saxophone,Baritone Saxophone,Soprano Saxophone,Tenor Saxophone - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1421819 Composed by Henry Purcell. Arranged by Robert Stevens. Baroque,Chamber,Classical,Early Music. 32 pages. SAXpress.com #1003167. Published by SAXpress.com (A0.1421819). Suite from Abdelazer Henry Purcell (1659-1695) SATB Saxophone Quartet Suite from Abdelazer by Henry Purcell, arranged for saxophone quartet SATB. Purcell wrote the incidental music for the play Abdelazer (sometimes spelled 'Abdelazar') in 1695, shortly before his death. It is a lively mix of songs and dances of the time. Typical of the day, several of the movements became well known as popular songs. The rondo was later made famous by Benjamin Britten, who used it as the theme for his set of variations, ‘The Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra’. The rondo as well as another selection, the Hornpipe, was included in the 2005 film Pride and Prejudice. This transcription for saxophone quartet SATB of Suite from Abdelazar is comprised of five of the ten selections Purcell wrote for the play. The movements are as follows: I. Overture II. Minuet III. Hornpipe IV. Air V. Rondo About the Composer: Henry Purcell (born c. 1659, London, England—died November 21, 1695, London) was an English composer of Baroque music. Purcell's musical style was uniquely English, although it incorporated Italian and French elements. Generally considered among the greatest English opera composers, Purcell is included with John Dunstaple and William Byrd as England's most important early music composers. Later, Purcell's music also had a strong influence on the composers of the English musical renaissance of the early 20th century. The cause of Purcell's untimely death at the age of 36 is unclear. There are many theories, some preposterous (he died from chocolate poisoning), some more likely: he died of tuberculosis. Purcell was universally mourned as a very great master of music.  Following his death, the officials at Westminster honoured him by unanimously voting that he be buried with no expense spared in the north aisle of the Abbey.

Saxophone Quartet,Woodwind Ensemble Alto Saxophone,Baritone Saxophone,Soprano Saxophone,Tenor Saxophone - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1124310 Composed by Edward Elgar. Arranged by Robert Luke Thompson. 19th Century,Chamber,Classical,Film/TV,Patriotic. 10 pages. Monkspath Music #725064. Published by Monkspath Music (A0.1124310). Sir Edward Elgar’s compositional output was prolific, with many well-known pieces, including the Pomp & Circumstance marches, Dream of Gerontius, and of course, the Engima Variations. Elgar’s legacy has been widely debated, but there is no doubt of his influence on ‘English’ music and composers such as Ralph Vaughan Williams, but also further afield, on composers as diverse as Richard Strauss, Jean Sibelius, and Igor Stravinsky. Along with a central theme woven and varied throughout the work, each movement of Engima Variations is also a musical illustration, based on a family member or close friend of Elgar, and indeed Elgar himself. He dedicated the work “to my friends pictured withinâ€. “Nimrod†is the name given to the ninth movement, based on Elgar’s editor and publisher, Augustus J, Jaeger. Musically, there is an obvious hint at the 2nd movement of Beethoven’s Piano Sonata Pathetique, but beyond this there are beautiful legato lines spread across the whole ensemble and a wide variety of timbral, dynamic, and tempo colourations. “Nimrod†has become a popular piece as a standalone item – often featuring in funerals, memorial services, and other solemn events such as Remembrance Sunday. Hans Zimmer also adapts the piece for use in the score for the 2017 film Dunkirk, and has become a standard tune to represent stoic ‘Britishness’.
