It has been reset by many composers, including César Franck (1822-1890). Franck’s Panis Angelicus within his Messe à trois voix (Mass for Three Voices – tenor, harp, cello with organ) has become his most famous piece.

A beautiful air that is performed often at weddings. Ruaidhrí Dall Ó Catháin, also known as Rory Dall O’Cahan, was a blind Irish harper and composer. A gentleman by birth, he travelled into Scotland in the company of noble persons. The story goes that a Lady insulted him. When she realized her error, she located him and apologized. It became the basis for this most famous composition.

The lyrics have been set to many melodies, but the most famous setting uses the traditional tune Low Down in the Broom.

In 1824 Ludwig van Beethoven used parts of that poem in his Ninth Symphony. In 1907 Henry van Dyke added his choice of words to Beethoven’s melody to create the hymn Joyful, Joyful We Adore Thee. Ode to Joy became the Anthem of the Council of Europe in 1972 and in 1985 the anthem of the European Community (EU). Ode to Joy is commonly used as a Wedding Recessional.
