Words that come to mind about this piece are strange, edgy, and fun. In just over a minute the music moves seamlessly through four different styles. I think of it as invoking images of mutant creatures wreaking havoc on a small town in a 1950's monster movie. Toads is meant to be OUT. The first section has a minor blues feeling even though it does not have have a minor blues harmonic structure. The solo fills (on E+7 and Db7) are fairly short on the demo recording. They can be played longer and have more of an avant-garde spirit. The second section has an angular melody line, with an emphasis on major 7th intervals, and shifting time. It can start softly and build in volume to the third section. The third section is also angular; however, there is a melodic shift from major 7th intervals to fourths & tri-tones and the rhythm section is in a more straight-ahead style. Finally, the fourth section (last 4 measures) has a funk feeling. This original piece, like its title says, is a kind of warm tune fully arranged for Jazz Dectet (3-2-1-4) starting with spun sounds to center the pitch for all the band while the rhythm drives easyly from standard light swing to hal-time feeling and double-time feeling adding some punches and breaks here and there. The second half of the tune covers all harmonized major scales in all  twelve keys inserting breaks and punches and short solos too. First in the set list, this piece is a must, it has been created as a starting warm up for the whole band, for each and every rehearsal.

Uxmal At Midnight is a slow tango. The tune is fairly simple however it has a beauty that invokes images and feelings of this magical place. This is one of my minimalist pieces. There are times when I use extended forms and times when I need only a few measures to convey a particular mood. The essential features of this piece are its simplicity, harmonic color, and use of space. The one exception to its simplicity is the shifting time. Like other pieces of mine that use shifting time, this music has a fluid movement -- with time expanding and contracting in ways that feel natural to me. For contrast, I decided to have the solo section entirely in 4/4. My minimalist pieces, and others that have a great amount of freedom, are heavily dependent upon the performers to bring the music to life. This is a peaceful bossa nova that is dedicated to Carla Bley, one of my favorite jazz composers. It is a fairly simple tune. Harmonically, it is built around D9 sus4 and Dm7 (b5) chords. I stumbled upon this pattern one day as I was playing piano. I immediately liked the feeling it creates and the shift in harmonic color (between implied Dorian and Locrian modes). This is the only tune of mine that uses it. The measure of 5/4 coming unexpectedly gives a push to the tune's momentum. As I worked on this tune I thought about having another section, but nothing clicked. I came to the conclusion that the music said everything it wanted to say in 18 bars.
