Published by Jim Ivy (A0.981663). The bamboula was originally a primitive drum used by inhabitants of western Africa and the West Indies especially in voodoo ceremonies and incantations. The name also applies to the dance performed to the beating of the bamboula.In New Orleans, on Sundays, enslaved Africans would gather at Congo Square, Across Rampart Street from the French Quarter, to socialize and dance to their native music. New Orleans jazz bands incorporated the infectious bamboula rhythms into early jazz and the rhythms are still played today.
