Uxmal At Midnight is a slow tango. The tune is fairly simple however it has a beauty that invokes images and feelings of this magical place. This is one of my minimalist pieces. There are times when I use extended forms and times when I need only a few measures to convey a particular mood. The essential features of this piece are its simplicity, harmonic color, and use of space. The one exception to its simplicity is the shifting time. Like other pieces of mine that use shifting time, this music has a fluid movement -- with time expanding and contracting in ways that feel natural to me. For contrast, I decided to have the solo section entirely in 4/4. My minimalist pieces, and others that have a great amount of freedom, are heavily dependent upon the performers to bring the music to life. Children's Song composed and arranged by Woodwind teacher and performer Don Turoso is arranged for a front line of three horns with four parts in the rhythm section.  All parts are integrally important.  This was recorded in 2005 on the Cd The Don Turoso Septet.  It is a medium tempo Latin feel with moderate range demands.  A very pretty melody with plenty of open area for solos in an A - B section.  The introduction can also be used as a break section between solos or just on the DC before repeating the head leading to the coda.  I rate this arrangement in the 3-4 range.  Recordings are available, as indicated for purchase or the listen to online.  Look for other Jazz combo, Big Band, Marching Band, and other titles to follow.
