The tune, ‘Maryland, My Maryland’, is based on the traditional German song ‘O, Tannenbaum’ or fir tree. The former version in Common Time was adopted by the State of Maryland as its State Song until 1921 when it was abandoned because of its association with divisive political and racial divisions in the Civil War. It has also become a ‘jazz standard ’and this arrangement, like some other versions, retains a ‘martial’ and ‘marching’ feel with the fanfares.

Cocktails is a lazy lounge style quartet- aimed at background, wedding, slow dance situations. It is in ternary form in concert E flat major and in 12/8 time with a sax lead and a impro solo written out, although this, as in other areas, can be replaced by own solos.

The piano part also has chords included to give flexibility- or to use other keys/rhodes, synth etc. An additional chord chart with top line part has also been included so the piece can be expanded to use other concert instruments like rhythm guitar.

This arrangement of Louiguy's Cherry Pink and Apple Blossom White was created with four horn parts (Alto Sax, Tenor Sax, Trumpet, Trombone), a rhythm trio, and arranged Congas, Bongos, Claves, and Cowbells (Agogo Bells). It's form gives the melody and a solo going twice through. A unique element to this arrangement are the added Clave and Agogo Bell parts exclusive to the solo section. The idea behind this is for the two horn players without a solo to take up either part and play some auxiliary percussion throughout the solo section until they can get back on their horn. This intermediate arrangement promises interactiveness, great instrumentation, and a fantastic sounding combo!
