By JC Croyle. By Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Arranged by JC Croyle. Classical,Contest,Festival,Historic,Jazz. 75 pages. JC Croyle #1005169. Published by JC Croyle (A0.1423969).

This piece was originally a classical string movement by Mozart.  This arrangement takes that and turns it into a small jazz combo piece for piano, upright bass, drums and tenor sax.  The tenor part could be switched to another brass or woodwind instrument or even a guitar.  The piano could also instead be a vibrapone or marimba part.  The piano part is the lead but the tenor has a lot of lead-like instances as well.  The tempo is increased slightly from the original and the piece is meant to be swung throughout.

By The Ides Of March. By James M. Peterik. Arranged by Dennis Ruello. Contemporary. Score and parts. 30 pages. Chicory Music #5725181. Published by Chicory Music (A0.734441).

Vehicle is a song recorded by American rock band The Ides of March for their debut studio album of the same name (1970). It was released as the lead single from the album in March 1970 through Warner Bros. Records. Written by vocalist and frontman Jim Peterik, the song is about a girl that often used him for his mode of transportation, leading Peterik to surmise that he was little more than her vehicle. The arrangement includes a distinctive horn section riff, which caused some listeners to mistake the band for Blood, Sweat and Tears, who were also popular in that era.

Vehicle was a commercial success, and was purported to be the fastest-selling single in the history of Warner Bros. at that time. It peaked at number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the US, while reaching the top 5 in Canada and top 30 in the United Kingdom. Despite this, the Ides of March never had another hit single, leaving them one-hit wonders. This arrangement includes Full Score, Voice, Trumpet, Alto sax, Tenor Sax, Trombone, Guitar, Electric Piano, Electric Bass, and Drum Set

Performance Time Approx. 3 min. 50 sec.

Composed by Mike Strand, ASCAP. Blues,Jazz. Score and parts. 6 pages. Michael M. Strand #6136125. Published by Michael M. Strand (A0.970761).

Mike Strand, ASCAP

This is a lead sheet with lyrics, chords and guitar fret boards, for a jazz group, small, or large, with singer or solo instruments. It serves as a good basis for a variety of arrangements, contra facts, and improvisations.

The audio sample is a jazz quintet: A slow swing jazz accompaniment from iReal Pro, combined with my duet tunes from Finale PrintMusic. In this sample, a flute takes the accompaniment (treble clef), with a baritone sax in the bass clef.

The main tune (bass clef) is accompanied, making this an unusual duet lead sheet. For example, a flute may accompany a baritone singer.

An option is to interchange the voice roles (e.g., main tune octave higher, accompaniment octave lower), or use one of the tunes of the duet by itself.

I wrote this piece in honor of immigrants, in recognition of the courage it takes to move to a new country and learn a new language. New immigrants often go through difficulties and setbacks, including persecution from citizens of their adopted country. This, despite the recent immigrant ancestry of most of the persecutors, notably in the USA.

In the subtitle of Immigrant Blues, I recognize my own immigrant ancestors, and also Anders Lundegård, who, like my paternal grandparents, moved to the USA from Sweden. Anders helped me with this piece, with his reviews and comments.

**Here are the lyrics for Immigrant Blues:

1.

Moving to the U. S., far away.

Life here is so bad, I will not stay.

Talked to Mom and Dad, they said OK.

I want to make a place for them some day.

2.

First time in the States was no picnic.

Half the time no work, and I got sick.

Some folks try to help, while others scoff.

I have friends, but others put me off.

3.

Looking bright and able, that’s my plan.

Taking ESOL classes when I can.

Learning English is no easy chore,

And I want my folks here, that’s for sure.

And I want my folks here, that’s for sure.

Oh, yeah!

SKU: A0.942959

Composed by Geoffrey Peterson. Jazz. Score and parts. 37 pages. Geoffrey Peterson #5792333. Published by Geoffrey Peterson (A0.942959).

The May 17, 1963, issue of Life Magazine featured a photo essay of appalling images taken by the American photographer Charles Moore. The opening paragraph bluntly stated that The pictures on these 11 pages are frightening. They are frightening because of the brutal methods being used by white policemen in Birmingham, Alabama, against Negro demonstrators . . . And they are especially frightening because the gulf between black and white is here visibly deepened. Known as the Birmingham campaign, Moore’s photographs of this senseless brutality sent shockwaves throughout the country and the world of the deeply embedded social and institutional racism and segregation of the South. On May 2, 1963, under direct orders from Birmingham’s then Commissioner of Public Safety, Eugene Bull Connor, all African Americans participating in a nonviolent demonstration organized by the Southern Christian Leadership Conference were to be subdued with high-pressure water blasts from fire hoses and violently attacked and taunted by police dogs. After seeing Moore’s photos in Life, Andy Warhol created a series of Race Riot paintings using a terrifying image of Moore’s of a man being attacked by a German shepherd in his trademark acrylic and silkscreen process. Interestingly, the title Race Riot is a contradiction because it was in fact a peaceful protest interrupted by the violence of the police. There is a menacing quality to the music that I hope conveys both Moore’s original photo and Warhol’s appropriation.

SKU: A0.781983

By Bing Crosby and Rosemary Clooney. By Irving Berlin. Arranged by Aaron Hettinga. Christmas,Contemporary,Holiday,Jazz,Standards. Score and parts. 10 pages. Aaron Hettinga #6027125. Published by Aaron Hettinga (A0.781983).

This lesser known holiday-season standard by the great Irving Berlin is available here for 4 Trombones and Rhythm section. This ballad had its debut in the classic film White Christmas with Bing Crosby and Rosemary Clooney.

This arrangement was written as a Head chart where, after the initial rundown of the melody, the form is repeated for as many soloists as are desired before a final repeat playing the tune and proceeding to the second ending. Chord changes are provided in all parts for flexibility in soloist selection.

For the most part, the ensemble parts are accessible to a broad range of playing abilities, but the top part is the greater challenge for range and melodic lyricism.

Performance options: This ballad runs the risk of dragging along so slowly that it feels interminable. Even at a moderately slow tempo, it’s important to keep things moving. If it feels that the solo section takes too long, it also works well to bring the ensemble back at the B section of the melody (meas. 21) for a briefer wrap up.
