Words that come to mind about this piece are strange, edgy, and fun. In just over a minute the music moves seamlessly through four different styles. I think of it as invoking images of mutant creatures wreaking havoc on a small town in a 1950's monster movie. Toads is meant to be OUT. The first section has a minor blues feeling even though it does not have have a minor blues harmonic structure. The solo fills (on E+7 and Db7) are fairly short on the demo recording. They can be played longer and have more of an avant-garde spirit. The second section has an angular melody line, with an emphasis on major 7th intervals, and shifting time. It can start softly and build in volume to the third section. The third section is also angular; however, there is a melodic shift from major 7th intervals to fourths & tri-tones and the rhythm section is in a more straight-ahead style. Finally, the fourth section (last 4 measures) has a funk feeling. The May 17, 1963, issue of Life Magazine featured a photo essay of appalling images taken by the American photographer Charles Moore. The opening paragraph bluntly stated that The pictures on these 11 pages are frightening. They are frightening because of the brutal methods being used by white policemen in Birmingham, Alabama, against Negro demonstrators . . . And they are especially frightening because the gulf between black and white is here visibly deepened. Known as the Birmingham campaign, Moore’s photographs of this senseless brutality sent shockwaves throughout the country and the world of the deeply embedded social and institutional racism and segregation of the South. On May 2, 1963, under direct orders from Birmingham’s then Commissioner of Public Safety, Eugene Bull Connor, all African Americans participating in a nonviolent demonstration organized by the Southern Christian Leadership Conference were to be subdued with high-pressure water blasts from fire hoses and violently attacked and taunted by police dogs. After seeing Moore’s photos in Life, Andy Warhol created a series of Race Riot paintings using a terrifying image of Moore’s of a man being attacked by a German shepherd in his trademark acrylic and silkscreen process. Interestingly, the title Race Riot is a contradiction because it was in fact a peaceful protest interrupted by the violence of the police. There is a menacing quality to the music that I hope conveys both Moore’s original photo and Warhol’s appropriation.

This arrangement of Louiguy's Cherry Pink and Apple Blossom White was created with four horn parts (Alto Sax, Tenor Sax, Trumpet, Trombone), a rhythm trio, and arranged Congas, Bongos, Claves, and Cowbells (Agogo Bells). It's form gives the melody and a solo going twice through. A unique element to this arrangement are the added Clave and Agogo Bell parts exclusive to the solo section. The idea behind this is for the two horn players without a solo to take up either part and play some auxiliary percussion throughout the solo section until they can get back on their horn. This intermediate arrangement promises interactiveness, great instrumentation, and a fantastic sounding combo!

When Louis Armstrong sang and played ‘Azalea’ with Duke Ellington in 1963, it was a union of two of the greatest and best known proponents of Jazz. Although both champions of Jazz’s African roots, they forged quite contrasting career paths and styles. Nevertheless, Louis’ inimitable larger than life talent was sympathetically supported by the Duke’s often idiosyncratic chord voicings. Although this arrangement is a feature for Trumpet, the notated Rhythm Section could also form the basis for a vocal version. It is at a very achievable level for School and University bands as well as being edited for ease of sight reading on gigs. Print normally on A4 paper – Score will come out as Landscape and parts as Portrait.

You want your concerts to be well visited and to help you with that, I make arrangements (and compositions) for trombonequartet with guitar, piano, bass and drums. They also contain an optional bass-trombone/ tuba part and sometimes a solo part. This one contains a trombone solo part. This arrangement of A Whole New World, is scored for Solo Trombone in front of the ensemble mentioned above.  There are two solo parts in the set. One high and and one low. You can combine those two if that makes you more comfortable. Durata: 3,5 minutes (approx.) The song itself is about Alladin taking Jasmine on a ride on the magic carpet. The lyrics are all about discovering what you didn’t know about and be grateful for all the adventures life gives. This makes it a perfect piece to play in a variety of places, like weddings, celebrations of any kind, graduations, not to mention many types of concerts. With a few adjustments you can also use parts of this arrangement and make it work. It’s most powerful when you use the whole band, but it still makes a lot of sense if you have to skip some of the parts. There are so many times I have had to skip a piece in a concert, using a not as good substitute, because we didn’t have the people to play it.
