The commercial recording was released on the Artists Recording Collective (ARC) label and available at the top music stores like: iTunes, Amazon Music, Google Play and CD Baby. STUDIO RECORDING NOTES The provided MP3 Audio Clip contains an excerpt of the commercial recording and features: Christopher Burnett – alto saxophone/composition; Roger Wilder – piano; Jeff Harshbarger – bass; Clarence Smith – drums; with Terri Anderson Burnett and Freda Proctor – flutes. The final mastering and mix by Craig Rettmer at C.R. Sound in Kansas City is truly amazing. ABOUT THE COMPOSER How are jazz careers made? Many have remarked on the big historical shift: musicians used to apprentice on the road with masters and learn the language firsthand, but those cultural conditions are fading, and the bandstand has been replaced by the graduate degree. There’s truth in that narrative, and yet it fails to account for the full variety of paths that players are taking as they strive to find their voice in this music. For alto saxophonist Christopher Burnett, the journey involved spending 22 years as a musician in the U.S. Army. He left the service in 1996 - I’ve been out nearly as long as I was in, he says - and resettled in 2001 in his native Kansas City metropolitan area. Two years earlier, in 1999, he had released his debut recording, Time Flies, and in 2008 he followed up with Theme Music, both on the Artists Recording Collective (ARC) label that he cofounded with saxophonist Erica Lindsay and pianist Sumi Tonooka. Now at age 58, Burnett reaches another level of achievement with Firebird, showcasing a fine working quartet and a set of compositions rich in beauty, subtlety and sophistication. There’s a remarkable lyrical ease and harmonic savvy in the compositions that make up Firebird, not least of all on the title track with its layered flutes and Latin-tinged rhythmic feel. Burnett’s legato eloquence and depth of expression on the slow 4/4 Ballad for An Optimist is another highlight. His choice of the inspired, metrically shifting A Risk I Take, by French horn virtuoso and colleague Mark Taylor, tells us much about his refined taste and interpretive abilities. Excerpt from the liner notes by: David R. Adler, New York, New York Also see: www.BurnettMusic.com.

Composed by Jule Styne and Sammy Cahn. Arranged by Aaron Hettinga. 20th Century,Film/TV,Jazz,Standards,Wedding. Score and parts. 17 pages. Aaron Hettinga #680902. Published by Aaron Hettinga (A0.1076789).

The enduring World War II- era standard “It's Been A Long, Long Time†has been recorded by many great artists through the years. More recently, the song has found renewed popularity due to its use in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s “Avengers†movies. This arrangement takes its cue from the recording by Harry James and his orchestra, and reworks the performance as presented here for Vocal soloist, 3 horns, and Rhythm section. This chart observes the original key and form of the classic recording by Harry James with vocal soloist Helen Forrest. The horn parts closely follow in the footsteps of the original recording, making this a good vehicle to showcase a talented trumpeter. The remaining horns play the supporting role of the most important elements of the large orchestra arrangement which requires strong players on all parts. The Rhythm section/Lead sheet incorporates the chord changes and most important rhythmic elements to allow a flexible instrumentation of rhythm section to adequately feature the trumpeter and vocalist. This arrangement is a great way to showcase talented instrumentalists and vocals on this classic piece of music!

Composed by Mike Strand. Concert,Jazz. Score and parts. 4 pages. Michael M. Strand #5795683. Published by Michael M. Strand (A0.970760).

By Mike Strand, ASCAP

Here’s a swing tune lead sheet, with lyrics, chord symbols, and guitar fret boards, for a jazz group, large or small, with a singer.  It’s a solid foundation for a variety of arrangements, contra facts, and improvisations.

The audio file is a swing accompaniment from iReal Pro, combined with the melody from Finale PrintMusic. In this sample, you hear a baritone saxophone in place of the singer, and an electric guitar for the instrumental sections.

The lyrics express frustration with white bigotry toward people with dark skin, and how that brand of racism surfaces in acts of police brutality. The lyrics pose both practical and ideal solutions.

Here are the lyrics:

For Way Too Long

For way too long, dark skin has been called blight,

And just to breathe, black folks have had to fight.

Civil rights laws are there; it’s only fair, we give them real bite.

(Instrumental)

Civil rights laws are there; it’s only fair, we give them real bite.

For way too long, bad cops have broken rules,

While their good partners get put down by them as fools.

But now we all may see the fall of bigots using blacks as tools.

(Instrumental)

But now we all may see the fall of bigots using blacks as tools.

For way too long, cold hearts remain unchanged.

But with strong rules, constraints can be arranged.

Enforcing laws need not be cause for folks to be estranged.

Lord, may our hearts be changed!

SKU: A0.734623

Composed by Eliot Daniel. Arranged by Dennis Ruello. Contemporary. Score and parts. 17 pages. Chicory Music #6692477. Published by Chicory Music (A0.734623).

From the second season onwards, the I Love Lucy signature tune we all know so well became the main theme, and one of the most recognizable pieces of music on the planet. It was written by composer Eliot Daniel who cranked it out in an afternoon as a favor to his old Coast Guard buddy Jess Oppenheimer, the show’s producer. Since Daniel still had another year under his exclusive contract to Fox, he asked Oppenheimer to keep his name out of it. Consequently his name does not appear on first or the second season TV credits for what became one of the most popular TV themes. Later, Daniel did seek credit and received royalties from syndicated reruns for the rest of his life.

The lyrics were written by Harold Adamson for an episode in the third season in which Lucy believes everyone has forgotten her birthday. So of course Ricky saves the day after a near disaster.

This arrangement for Jazz Combo remains faithful to the original theme.
