Arranged by Mike Strand, ASCAPâ??This is a lead sheet for a jazz or Latin combo or ensemble.  It may serve as the basis for a variety of arrangements, improvisations, or contrafacts.The audio sample is a jazz bossa nova iReal Pro accompaniment, combined with the lead sheet melody in Finale PrintMusic.  In this arrangement, you will hear acoustic guitar and violin, often heard in tango ensembles in the early 20th century. This bossa nova is inspired by Eduardo Arolasâ??s never-published tango, Volcán (Volcano).  At least itâ??s never been published according to the todotango.com web site.  Eduardo Arolas is a famous tango composer who is well documented on that web site.  Also on that web site, you can listen to Osvaldo Requenaâ??s piano performance of Volcán from Arolasâ??s original piano sheets (written circa 1917).   Years ago, I developed and wrote a tango quintet arrangement of Volcán by listening carefully to Requenaâ??s recorded piano performance on the web site.  My quintet arrangement, in turn, was my source for writing this bossa nova arrangement.   So, now Volcán has finally been published, but as a bossa nova!  Wherever Señor Arolas may be, I hope he understands.  In this bossa nova arrangement, I believe I've preserved the spirit of Arolas's original tango.Without knowing exactly what was in Eduardo Arolas's mind when he wrote the original tango, this is my personal idea of the message behind the music:Introduction:  Let me tell you a story about a volcano that happened long ago.Part A (bars 5-20):  It's a sad tale about human helplessness and suffering in the face of natural catastrophe.Part B (bars 21-36):  The people living in a town below a volcanic peak were going about business, leisure, and play, experiencing the ordinary cares and pleasures of life.Part C (bars 41-52): One day, without warning, the volcano erupted, with smoke, falling hot rocks and ash, and hot lava flows.  Some folks got away, but others were killed, buried or injured, and all that was left of the town was devastation, suffering, and, eventually, calm.Part A' (bars 53-end):  A sad tale, but may we learn from it, and may the souls of the poor victims rest in peace.If you listen to and read the lyrics of Arolas's great tango, La Cachila, or listen to another superb tango of his, El Marne, you will witness further his talent and skill in composing dramatic music.  My piano arrangement of La Cachila is for sale on this web site.

This lesser known holiday-season standard by the great Irving Berlin is available here for 4 Trombones and Rhythm section. This ballad had its debut in the classic film White Christmas with Bing Crosby and Rosemary Clooney.This arrangement was written as a Head chart where, after the initial rundown of the melody, the form is repeated for as many soloists as are desired before a final repeat playing the tune and proceeding to the second ending. Chord changes are provided in all parts for flexibility in soloist selection. For the most part, the ensemble parts are accessible to a broad range of playing abilities, but the top part is the greater challenge for range and melodic lyricism.Performance options: This ballad runs the risk of dragging along so slowly that it feels interminable. Even at a moderately slow tempo, it’s important to keep things moving. If it feels that the solo section takes too long, it also works well to bring the ensemble back at the B section of the melody (meas. 21) for a briefer wrap up.

By Mike Strand, ASCAP This is a bossa nova lead sheet with chord symbols and guitar fret boards, for a jazz or Latin ensemble, large or small, and a solo instrument (flute, saxophone, guitar, etc.). So it supports a variety of arrangements, contra facts, and improvisations. The audio sample is a jazz bossa nova accompaniment, combined with my tune from Finale PrintMusic - a quartet ensemble.  In this particular sample, you'll hear a flute carry the tune.Levantado translates to lifted up, and connotes being cheered up or advanced in some way.  This tune would serve well at a graduation party. Many bossa novas are in minor keys and convey sadness or melancholy.  Levantado is not your typical bossa -- you’ll hear major chords and ascending melody motifs, good for a happy occasion. Libertango, by Astor Piazzolla, was my inspiration for this composition, and he is recognized in the subtitle.  The basic structure of Levantado is similar to Piazzolla's piece, but the harmonic progressions and melody in Levantado differ from those in Libertango.  The chord base notes in my piece often ascend in the progressions, where they descend in Piazzolla's piece.  The melody motifs between the two pieces also differ -- gone are Libertango's repeated 7-note figures, and there are reversals or inversions in my piece relative to Piazzolla's other melodic material.

Studio B is the music classroom in the school's performing arts center where I worked with the SSFS jazz ensemble in a series of classes. This is a romantic samba. I wrote this tune to express my wife's qualities of warmth and surprise...and how she is a wonderful dancer. I think of the tune as being fairly straight-forward; however, it has some surprises. The AB form is unusual in how the A part is 15 measures and the B part is 22. While the music is mostly in 4/4, there are two places where a measure or two of 3/4 is used to shake things up. Harmonically, there is a mix of standard II-V chord changes, parallel harmony, and symmetrical harmony. The melody has a floating quality. The sustained notes give the rhythm section space for fills. This is The Cat Empire's hit Hello arranged for (Jazz) Combo with vocals, guitar, piano, bass, drums, 4 piece flexible horn section and an optional bari sax. The funky style with shuffled 16th notes along with the latin montuno like piano part makes this song a real groover. Horn voices are 1&2 on trumpet or alto sax, 3&4 on trombone or tenor sax. A percussion player can easily join in. There is a section where all horn players play a unison line on soprano recorders, which can be a lot of fun. However, this can also be accomplished by the keyboard player using a flute sound, if no recorders are available. For the vocals, only lyrics are provided (since it is mostly spoken). A full score and parts for all instruments are included. The mp3 does not include the guitar part, nor the improvised keyboard fills. Feel free to repeat certain sections or open up the collective improvisation part for an exciting live performance.
