Day Dreams is a collection of six solo piano miniatures the young Arthur Sullivan published in 1867. The pieces amply demonstrate a natural melodic gift that would reach full fruition in the enduring comic operas Sullivan wrote with W.S. Gilbert. This is a contrasting pair of Daydreams, numbers 2 and 6, arranged for woodwind quintet. The first Daydream, Robert and Clara, is an expressive cantabile aria that evokes the music of Robert Schumann. The oboe, clarinet, and horn sing the complete melody, but everyone gets at least a fragment of it. (This selection is great for weddings and church services as well as for the concert hall.) The second, À l'Hongroise, is the flashy finale of the Day Dreams collection. It's a spirited Hungarian-inspired dance with a chromatic melody in shifting tonality, with harmonic turns audacious enough to thrill even 21st century listeners, culminating in a wide-ranging arpeggio passage for the four woodwinds. The soft melody, accompanied by harmonies that could only have come from Beethoven's pen, create an atmosphere of tranquility and impressive calm. For beginning students it is a great piece to develop the notion of the cantabile, and can be performed in academic recitals or concerts. Piano Sonata No. 8 in C minor, op. 13, generally known as, the Pathetic Sonata, was published in 1799, although it was written the year before. Beethoven dedicated this work to his friend, Prince Karl Lichnowsky. With this sonata, Beethoven opened the door to the future - no one after hearing this work - could close their eyes to the possibilities of expression presented here.

In order to increase sales Quantz described them as for flutes or violins and in his introduction (in fluent French) also indicated their suitability for bassoons - who in that period would be accustomed to transposing at sight.The three movements, Grave - Allabreve, ma presto, Cantabile & Più tosto Vivace are suitable for advanced intermediate players of equal ability. The final movement is a canon throughout.
