The melody is taken by oboe clarinet flute and bassoon.

in the reprise of the tune, the bass melody is played in unison octaves by bassoon and clarinet.

The flute plays the melody with the oboe sometimes in unison, sometimes at the octave

This gives some variation throughout the piece.

This is my arrangement  of No.5 Springdans (Spring Dance/Leaping Dance) from his Lyric Pieces Op.38

Arranged wind quintet

Although Spring Dance is the traditional translation of the Norwegian Springdans, the word refers to its sense in English of leap or jump  rather than to the season Spring.  The booklet notes to Grieg: Complete Works for Piano Solo; Gerhard Oppitz, Piano use  the less ambiguous translation Leaping Dance.

The melody is taken by clarinet, then oboe then flute.

Grieg later arranged four of the pieces from Op.54 as his Lyric Suite for orchestra.

Grieg slightly altered the order of the numbers in the orchestral suite by swapping No. 4 Notturno with No. 3 March of the Dwarfs. The final order of this is:

1. Shepherd Boy
2. Norwegian March
3. Notturno (originally No. 4)
4. March of the Dwarfs (originally No. 3).
