H.P. Takes Five is a cheeky take on Henry Purcell’s famous trumpet tune. Instead of 4/4 time, it’s in 5/4, with a few 7/4 measures thrown in for a bit more fun! Purcell (1659–95) wrote much incidental music for plays and so-called semi-operas performed in London’s theaters, and often included a trumpet tune as a signal for the next act. A trumpet was the only instrument that could be heard above the noise of the audience! This is the wind quintet adaptation of the arrangement originally written for brass quintet. The lead moves around the parts and so this is indicated to make sure that the appropriate line remains prominent. Pay attention to all the tenuto and staccato marks. Make sure that the ff in measures 26, 42, 52, and at the end are as loud as you can get them without overblowing. The fluid lines of the lyrical middle section will test your powers of concentration.

Sukiyaki (Ue o Muite Aruk� (上を���歩��) is a song recorded by Japanese crooner Kyu Sakamoto, first released in Japan in 1961. The Japanese title translates as I Look Up As I Walk, and has no relation to the English-language title! One of the best-selling singles of all time, this is a lovely, simple tune arranged for wind quintet.

The Chaconne was composed for organ but not published during Johann Pachelbel’s lifetime. First Publication was in 1901 by Breitkopf und Härtel. The four bar/measure theme is repeated as are all 25 variations. In almost every instance the repeat would have been more elaborate or played in a different register on the organ.

In arranging the Chaconne for wind players I have used the different characteristics of the wind instruments in varying combinations and changes of register to create what I hope is an enjoyable and entertaining concert piece for players of advanced intermediate standard. The three part writing has been expanded to the five instruments of the standard woodwind quintet to give a wider scope for variation of scoring which also enables the players some breathing space.

The dynamic markings are editorial so do feel free to use your own.

Lyric Pieces (Norwegian: Lyriske stykker) is a collection of 66 short pieces for solo piano written by Edvard Grieg. 

They were published in 10 volumes, from 1867 (Op. 12) to 1901 (Op. 71).

The collection includes several of his best known pieces, such as 

Wedding Day at Troldhaugen (Bryllupsdag på Troldhaugen), 
To Spring (Til våren), 
March of the Trolls (Trolltog), and 
Butterfly (Sommerfugl).

This is my arrangement of Op.54 No.2 Gangar  (Norwegischer Bauernmarsch  -  Norwegian rustic march)



Tempo marking is Allegretto marcato in 6/8
My arrangement is NOT tutti throughout.

The melody is shared out amongst flute oboe and clarinet.

A beutiful tune for your quintet.

Grieg later arranged four of the pieces from Op.54 as his Lyric Suite for orchestra.

Grieg slightly altered the order of the numbers in the orchestral suite by swapping No. 4 Notturno with No. 3 March of the Dwarfs. The final order of this is:

1. Shepherd Boy
2. Norwegian March
3. Notturno (originally No. 4)
4. March of the Dwarfs (originally No. 3).
