The optimal instrumentation is, of course, Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Bassoon and Horn. But, additional parts have been added so that a Bass Clarinet covering Bassoon and a Bb Horn part in case the student only reads that part on the horn or is covered with flugelhorn/baritone or another Bb instrument. The quintets were always performed one per part and the students enjoyed playing this arrangement from 6th grade through high school!
