This woodwind quintet arrangement turns the traditional French carol Patapan into a Patapan Fantasy, which also includes quotes from the carols God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen, Joy to the World, O Come, O Come, Emmanuel, We Three Kings of Orient Are, and Good King Wenceslas, representing carols from England, France, the Czech Republic, and the United States. It is perfect for all holiday events, gatherings, recitals, or caroling gigs. The arrangement was written for most ensembles, from advanced high school quintets to college ensembles to professional quintets. What appealed to me most about this piece was that it's pitched in a minor key, making it slightly different from most Christmas carols. The lyrics are similar to The Little Drummer Boy: When you hear the fife and drum, dance and make the village hum. I have included an alternate bass clarinet part in lieu of a missing bassoon. Famous for his orchestral work The Planets, he wrote Christmas Day for his students at an English school to be performed by voices and orchestra during the holiday season. Several familiar Christmas carols are arranged so that two or three may be heard at the same time. The effect of Holst’s polyphonic treatment becomes even more transparent in the instrumentation provided here. The arrangement by Clyde Grabski is for the standard woodwind quintet, but also includes substitute parts for the Oboe (Clarinet) and Bassoon (Bass Clarinet). Scores for both ensembles are included.

Un Flambeau, Jeanette, Isabelle! is a Provençal Christmas song from the 17th century. This song was first published in 1553 in France. The music is attributed to Nicolas Saboly and the text to Émile Blémont. The song tells the story of two farmers, Jeannette and Isabelle, who are going to milk their cows in a crib in Bethlehem, and find Jesus sleeping in hay. The two women run to Bethlehem to announce to the inhabitants the coming of Christ and the inhabitants come with their torches to see this for themselves. The painter Georges de La Tour painted a Nativity called The Newborn Inspired by the Song. Originally, the song was not a Christmas song but a dance song for the nobles. Little known in France today, it is most often interpreted by Anglo-Saxons on the occasion of the Christmas holidays, especially in the United States. The English version is entitled Bring a torch, Jeanette, Isabella!. This arrangement for wind quintet (in the key of Bb) has 5 verses (with different arrangements) There is a bridge passage at the start, end and between each verse. This is my arrangement of Gustav Holst's arrangement.It is arranged for wind quintetThe French composer Marin Marais composed the tune as a dance for his opera Alcyone of 1706, with the title Marche pour les Matelots.The tune was subsequently included in Raoul Auger Feuillet's 1706 Recueil de contredansealong with a longways proper dance, La Matelotte, which Feuillet had himself written to go with the tune.In 1710 John Essex (d. 1744) published an English translation of Feuillet's work called, For the Further Improvement of Dancing, in which the dance is given as The Female Saylor.The words were written around 1860 while William Morris, then 26, was working as an apprentice in the office of the architect, Edmund Street, presumably under the persuasion of his fellow students who at that time had a taste for part-song. It became known as the Christmas Carol Masters in This Hall (alternative title: Nowell, Sing We Clear) Gustav Holst incorporated the carol into his work Three Carols H133 (1916–17) along with Christmas Song: On this Day and I Saw Three Ships.
