Bring Us in Good Ale is a medieval English drinking song celebrating good drink and honoring Our Lady. For the medieval man, convivial drinking was a part of life, and drinks were enjoyed with nearly every meal. The English beverage of choice was ale. In Bring us in Good Ale the singers jocularly excuse themselves from mutton, eggs and pudding and instead stand firm in their call for their favorite drink. 

As they list all the dishes they refuse, the singers indirectly give thanks for the good season that has led to the plenty they are enjoying.

Gustav Holst arranged it for unaccompanied choir as one of his 4 carols Op.34.
It is quite short.

Gustav Holst (1874-1934) was an English composer of Swedish descent. Famous for his orchestral work The Planets, he wrote Christmas Day for his students at an English school to be performed by voices and orchestra during the holiday season. Several familiar Christmas carols are arranged so that two or three may be heard at the same time. The effect of Holst’s polyphonic treatment becomes even more transparent in the instrumentation provided here.

The arrangement by Clyde Grabski is for the standard woodwind quintet, but also includes substitute parts for the Oboe (Clarinet) and Bassoon (Bass Clarinet). Scores for both ensembles are included.

This arrangement of seven traditional Christmas favorites will make your heart joyful as you prepare for the Christmas season! The melody moves around from instrument to instrument in a conversation-like way, with rich harmonies and beautiful descants enhancing the melodies. The medley begins triumphantly in the key of concert F Major, moves soulfully to the parallel minor, then finishes brightly back in F Major.

 Christmas carols featured are:

·     Deck the Halls

·     God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen

This is an easy Christmas quintet with additional tenor sax and bass clarinet parts to use for the horn and bassoon respectively if required. Lullay, mine liking is a Middle English lyric poem or carol of the 15th century which frames a narrative describing an encounter of the Nativity with a song sung by the Virgin Mary to the infant Christ. The refrain is an early example of an English lullaby; the term lullaby is thought to originate with the lu lu or la la sound made by mothers or nurses to calm children, and by or bye bye, another lulling sound (for example in the similarly ancient Coventry Carol)

There are a number of surviving medieval English verses associated with the birth of Jesus which take the form of a lullaby, of which this is probably the most famous example. Written by an anonymous hand, the text is found uniquely in Sloane MS 2593, a collection of medieval lyrics now held in the British Library.

My arrangement is transcribed from Gustav Holst's setting of the text, which he calls Lullay, My Liking.
It is number 2 from Holst's 4 Carols for Unaccompanied Choir Op.34

The solo verses are played by oboe, flute, clarinet,oboe and bassoon together and finally horn.
The refrain has been arranged in a differnt instrumental line up each time it is played.
