SKU: A0.1028375

Composed by Joe Boboige. Contemporary. 31 pages. Joseph Boboige #3502567. Published by Joseph Boboige (A0.1028375).

In Greek mythology, Niobe was the wife of King Amphion of Thebes.  She boasted the superiority of her six sons and six daughters to the gods.  The deities Apollo and Artemis killed all of her children in response.  After burying her children, she returned home and weeping, turned into a rock on Mount Sipylus.

This one movement programmatic work features the oboe as the weeping mother using glissando produced by moving the reed out of the mouth, rather than slowly depressing the keys.  Standard woodwind quintet instrumentation.

Composed by Gabriel Faure. Arranged by Ray Thompson. 20th Century,Wedding. 11 pages. RayThompsonMusic #4405172. Published by RayThompsonMusic (A0.553784).

The Dolly Suite, Op. 56, is a collection of pieces for piano four-hands by Gabriel Fauré. It consists of short pieces written or revised between 1893 and 1896, to mark the birthdays and other events in the life of the daughter of the composer's mistress.

An orchestral version of the suite was scored in 1906 by Henri Rabaud, and has, like the original piano duet version, received several recordings. The best-known section of the suite, the Berceuse, has been arranged for several combinations of instruments. In Britain it became famous as the play-out tune to Listen with Mother.

The suite, consisting of six short pieces, each with its own title: Berceuse, Mi-a-ou, Le jardin de Dolly, Kitty-valse, Tendresse and Le pas espagnol. The complete suite takes about fifteen minutes to perform.

Mi-a-ou

Allegro vivo. Mi-a-ou was written for Dolly's second birthday in June 1894. The title does not refer to a pet cat, as has often been supposed, but to Dolly's attempts to pronounce the name of her elder brother Raoul, who later became one of Fauré's favourite pupils. The young Dolly called her brother Messieu Aoul, which Fauré took as the original title for the piece. In his finished manuscript the title is shortened to Miaou (without hyphens). The Fauré scholar Robert Orledge writes that the title Mi-a-ou, like that of the Kitty-valse later in the suite, is the responsibility of Fauré's publisher, Julien Hamelle.[

Composed by Gabriel Faure. Arranged by Philip Le Bas. 20th Century. Score and parts. 113 pages. Philip Le Bas #3590141. Published by Philip Le Bas (A0.818162).

Faure’s piano duet entitled Dolly Suite is here arranged by Philip Le Bas for a wind sextet, consisting of a standard wind quintet (flute, oboe, clarinet, horn and bassoon) plus bass clarinet. The bass clarinet gives the music more sonority and it allows the arranger more opportunity to bring out Faure’s sumptuous harmonies. Dolly was the nickname of the baby daughter of Emma Bardac, with whom Faure had a long-running affair, and each of the pieces has a slightly different association with childhood.

1)   The Berceuse (lullaby) is best remembered as the theme tune to the BBC’s Listen with Mother, and its tune is indelibly marked into the memories of generations of radio listeners between 1950 and 1982. It was written for Dolly’s first birthday. (An alternative part for clarinet in A is available for this movement, to avoid the otherwise slightly tricky key signature of F sharp major!)

2)   Mi-a-ou has nothing to do with cats, but is a version of Dolly’s first attempts to pronounce the name of her brother Raoul. Written for her second birthday, it is a delicate and playful scherzo with lots of cross-rhythms for the instruments.

3)   Le Jardin de Dolly is regarded by some as the best piece in the collection, with its gorgeous tune and unexpected harmonies, creating an impressionistic picture of a beautiful, peaceful French garden.

4)   Kitty-Valse again has nothing to do with cats but with the family dog Ketty, who whirls round and round, in unrelenting cheerfulness.

5)   In Tendresse Faure introduces more chromatic harmonies, used in his later works. As its name and its key of D flat suggests, the music here seems to express deep and shifting emotions associated with intimate relationships, while retaining a sense of calm and comfort throughout.

6)   The last piece, Le Pas Espagnole is a thrilling journey across the border into the exotic Spanish world of dance. There is much in common with Chabrier’s Espana, and here the wind players can enjoy playing at full tilt in an exciting and tuneful end to the suite.

Music for Springtime was inspired in part by Samuel Barber's woodwind quintet Summer Music, a staple of the
repertoire written in 1956. Music for Springtime is a not an homage to Barber's work but does reflect and touch upon
some of the moods and character changes heard in Summer Music. Music for Springtime was also shaped by the
circumstances and timing of its composition: I wrote it in the year after I moved from California back to my native
Pennsylvania, shortly after the birth of my daughter, and mostly in the springtime. Thoughts of rebirth and
rejuvenation, but also of the uncertainty of transition, were undoubtedly present while I wrote.

Composed by Franz Liszt. Arranged by Ray Thompson. Christian,Christmas,Romantic Period,Sacred. 19 pages. RayThompsonMusic #3371795. Published by RayThompsonMusic (A0.553634).

Weihnachtsbaum (English: Christmas Tree; French: Arbre de Noel) is a suite of 12 pieces written by Franz Liszt in 1873–76, with revisions in 1881.

The suite exists in versions for solo piano and piano four-hands.

Weihnachtsbaum does not demand great virtuosity, and it has been described as a distant relation of Schumann’s Kinderszenen and Debussy’s Children’s Corner. It occupies an unusual place in Liszt’s output, and it may be for these reasons that it has received relatively little attention from performers. Liszt dedicated Weihnachtsbaum to his first grandchild Daniela von Bülow (1860-1940; daughter of Cosima and Hans von Bülow). Daniela had accompanied her grandfather to Rome due to his frail condition.

The first performance was on Christmas Day 1881 in Daniela’s Rome hotel room. This was the day on which her mother Cosima always celebrated her birthday, although she was actually born on Christmas Eve.

This is No 4. Adeste Fideles (O come all ye Faithful)

Arranged for wind dectet: a somewhat different version than the usual carol. with additional instruments (clarinet and bass clarinet  as optional alternatives for one of the oboes and one of the bassoons.

Transposed from the original key of A into Bb to make it easier to perform

Composed by Stephen Foster. Arranged by Judith Katz. Score and Parts. 18 pages. Imagine Music - Digital #CMS1612. Published by Imagine Music - Digital (IZ.CMS1612).

9 x 12 in inches.

Jeanie With The Light Brown Hair is one of the most enduring, and popular American songs of all times.
Characterized as a parlor song, it was written by Stephen Foster, and published by Firth, Pond & Co. of NewYork, in
1854.
In 1850, Foster married Jane Denny McDowell, whose nickname was Jennie. However, this was an unhappy
marriage, short-lived, with numerous conflicts and separations. Jeanie With The Light Brown Hair, was written as
perhaps an attempt to win his wife back. To add to his problems, Foster also ran into deep financial difficulties.
Jeanie With the Light Brown Hair was virtually unknown during its time. When it was first published, the royalties
on the ten thousand copies sold, earned just $200 for Stephen Foster. To make ends meet, he had to sell the rights to
Jeanie, as well as other songs. After his death, the rights to Jeanie With The Light Brown Hair reverted back to his
wife and daughter.
It would indeed be a pleasant surprise to Stephen Foster, if he only knew what a wide range of artists have adapted
this song to different genres. Among solo instrumentalists, Jascha Heifitz, and William Primrose have arranged it
for solo violin and viola. The big bands of Gene Krupa, and Glen Miller have recorded it. The great R & B artist,
Sam Cooke used it, as well as opera stars, Marilyn Horne and John McCormick, who added it to their concert
repertoire.
The song's frequent airplay in the 1940's, led Spike Jones to create a parody, called, I Dream of Jeanie with the
Light Blue Jeans. Les Brown in 1941, created a big band song, Joltin' Joe DiMaggio with the line.....We Dream of
Joey With the Light Brown Bat. Even Bugs Bunny got into the act. The 1960 short, From Hare To Heir, features
Bugs singing, I dream of Jeanie, she's a light brown hare
My arrangement, for woodwind quintet is written to capture a lyric, singing style, which I think Foster had in mind.
