Debussy: Danse bohémienne 

La Danse bohémienne (Bohemian Dance) is a piano piece composed in the late summer of 1880. This is the composer's first published piano work. It was judged by Tchaikovsky as follows...

It's really a very nice thing, though really too short; not one thought is expressed through to the end and the form is extremely messy and devoid of wholeness ...  

It was written when he was eighteen years old for Nadejda von Meck, Tchaikovsky's rich and generous patroness.

 Frank Dawes writes of the Danse bohémienne, there is perhaps a mild gipsiness that may have been picked up from the gipsy singers at the Moscow cabarets that Debussy is reputed to have frequented. In texture the piece has something of the salon style of Tchaikovsky, though very much simplified.

This straightforward piece, in B minor and 2/4 time, isn't altogether without a few dashes of polka rhythm, but its only notable point of originality comes in the coda, where a tonic chord over a submediant pedal point highlights the interval of a major seventh, possible slightly Russian in character.

The score was first published in 1932 by Schott (Maintence), then by Henle (1991, ed. Ernst-Günter Heinemann) and Durand (2000, ed. Roy Howat)

It is arranged for standard wind quintet.

Edvard Grieg was a Norwegian composer and pianist born on June 15, 1843, in Bergen, Norway. He came from a musical family and showed great talent for music at a young age. He studied at the Leipzig Conservatory in Germany, where he was exposed to the music of leading German composers, such as Robert Schumann and Felix Mendelssohn.

Grieg composed a variety of works, including orchestral music, chamber music, songs, and piano pieces. He is best known for his composition “Peer Gynt,� which includes the popular suite “In the Hall of the Mountain King.� Other famous works by Grieg include the Piano Concerto in A Minor and the Holberg Suite.

Throughout his career, Grieg was devoted to promoting Norwegian music and culture. He was a central figure in the Norwegian music scene and worked to establish a national identity through his music.

Grieg’s influence on Norwegian music was significant, and he is considered one of the leading figures in the Norwegian Romantic movement. His music was also highly regarded by his contemporaries, including Johannes Brahms and Claude Debussy.

Edvard Grieg died on September 4, 1907, in Bergen, Norway, at the age of 64. His contributions to classical music were significant and he left a lasting legacy on Norwegian and European music.

A young lady by the name of Katie was a devoted baseball fanatic. In fact almost every penny she had was spent on tickets to see her favorite team. Her boyfriend wanted to take her to see a show on a weekend afternoon but Katie declined instead insisting on going to the ballpark. This was not uncommon for her as she attended every home game sitting where she could call the players (usually by the first name) and let the umpires have it when an unfavorable ruling was made. In the heat of a game when the score was tied Katie would get other fans to cheer on the team by singing.
