Sports et divertissements (Sports and Pastimes) is a cycle of 21 short piano pieces composed in 1914 by Erik Satie.

The set consists of a prefatory chorale and 20 musical vignettes depicting various sports and leisure activities. First published in 1923, it has long been considered one of his finest achievements.

Musically it represents the peak of Satie's humoristic piano suites (1912-1915), but stands apart from that series in its fusion of several different art forms. Sports originally appeared as a collector's album with illustrations by Charles Martin, accompanied by music, prose poetry and calligraphy. The latter three were provided by Satie in his exquisite handwritten scores, which were printed in facsimile.

This is my arrangement for wind quintet of:
8. Le Yachting (Yachting) -
Modéré (Moderately.)

(In half-notes, bass octaves). Legato.

Satie's prose:

Quel temps !
Le vent souffle comme un phoque.
Le yacht danse.
Il a l'air d'un petit fou.
La mer est démontée.
Pourvu qu'elle ne se brise pas sur un rocher.
Personne ne peut la remonter.
Je ne veux pas rester ici, dit la jolie passagère.
Ce n'est pas un endroit amusant.
J'aime mieux autre chose.
Allez me chercher une voiture.


A stern ostinato in the lower reaches of the piano summons up a wind-blown sea as it tosses about members of a yachting party.

A pretty lady passenger is not amused by the rough weather. I'd rather do something else, she pouts.

Go fetch me a car.

The sea ostinato returns to end the piece.

Satie: Sarabande No.1  

Arranged standard wind quintet

The Sarabandes are three dances for solo piano composed in 1887 by Erik Satie. Along with the famous Gymnopédies (1888) they are regarded as his first important works, and the ones upon which his reputation as a harmonic innovator and precursor of modern French music, beginning with Debussy, principally rests. The Sarabandes also played a key role in Satie's belated discovery by his country's musical establishment in the 1910s, setting the stage for his international notoriety.

French composer and critic Alexis Roland-Manuel wrote in 1916 that the Sarabandes represented a milestone in the evolution of our music...pieces of an unprecedented harmonic technique, born of an entirely new aesthetic, which create a unique atmosphere, a sonorous magic of complete originality.

The sarabande is a dance in triple meter that originated in the Spanish colonies of Central America in the mid-1500s. It had migrated to Europe by the 17th Century, where in France it became a popular slow court dance. Satie's modern reinterpretations consist of three dances with a total duration of roughly 15 minutes:

Sarabande No. 1 - A-flat major (This one)
Sarabande No. 2 - D-sharp minor
Sarabande No. 3 - B-flat minor

The melody is shared amongst the top 4 instruments, and the quintet do not play tutti all of the time. This adds more interest and variation to the piece.

Je te veux (I Want You) is a sung waltz, or valse chantée, by Erik Satie to erotic lyrics by Henry Pacory. Its two verses and repeated chorus were written for Paulette Darty, whose accompanist Satie had been and who first sang it in 1903 at La Scala, a cabaret in Paris.

Satie composed various versions: for piano and voice, as published in 1903; for an orchestra of brass instruments; for full orchestra, with a trio section added between the chorus and the second verse; and at some point for solo piano including this added trio section.

My Arrangment for standard wind quintet is of the solo piano version, so it includes the additional trio section.

The melody is shared amongst the 4 top instruments, and the quintet do NOT play tutti all the way through.

La belle excentrique (The Eccentric Beauty) is a dance suite for small orchestra by French composer Erik Satie. A parody of music hall clichés, it was conceived as a choreographic stage work and by modern standards can be considered a ballet.

Satie gave it the whimsical subtitle fantaisie sérieuse (A Serious Fantasy). It was premiered at the Théâtre du Colisée in Paris on June 14, 1921, conducted by Vladimir Golschmann. The composer later arranged it for piano four hands.

Satie composed this set of solo dances between July and October 1920. It was a high-spirited throwback to his turn-of-the-century cabaret idiom after a brief serious period that had produced the cantata Socrate (1918) and the piano Nocturnes (1919). The suite consists of three dances (march, waltz, can-can) and an instrumental ritornello.
