The Mysterious Barricades by François  Couperin was written in 1717 for harpsichord. This arrangement is in 5 parts for Flute 1, Flute 2, Alto, Bass and Contrabass Flutes. The piece is in the Style Brisé of the French Baroque.  The music is syncopated and the melodic  line ambiguous. With arranging this work for flute ensemble the character of the  piece is changed through the flutes’ ability to sustain notes. It enables a darker more  blended tone enhancing the sense of mystery of this unusual piece. The typical Baroque  embellishments were purposefully omitted; however performers should feel free to add stylistic embellishments.

5 Minuets arranged for flute, oboe, clarinet in Bb, horn in F & bassoon. Numbers 1, 3 & 5 each have two trios, numbers 2 & 4 do not have trios. The originals for string quartet were composed on November 19th 1813 - exactly fifteen years before Schubert's death at the age of 31. They remained unpublished until 1886, though they were probably performed at social gatherings of Schubert and his friends along with the 5 German Dances with 7 trios and Coda composed around the same time. The variety of style and content shows Schubert experimenting and pushing the boundaries of the minuet beyond Classical into the Romantic era. Players of intermediate standard and above will enjoy exploring these exuberant pieces.

Beethoven Country Dances Beethoven wrote 12 Country Dances WoO14 for orchestra .(composed 1791 - 1802.) They are all quite short: some have trios.

Douze Contredanses (Fr.) or Zwölf Contretänzes (Ge.)

They are probably better known as  a set of 3 piano pieces called  Contre-Tanzes  which are noted frei bearbeitet von Isidor Wilhelm Seiss (freely adapted by  Isidor Wilhelm Seiss) Arrangements of those pieces are available on this site.

I have arranged the first six dances by Beethoven for wind quintet. I have used Beethoven’s natural horn parts as a guide for my horn part, so each dance has a horn part for a different natural horn. I also include a horn part in F

Some of the dances have parts for clarinet in A.(I have included a clarinet in Bb part for those cases)

Grieg: Lyric Pieces Op.38 No.5 Springdans (Spring Dance/Leaping Dance)

Lyric Pieces (Norwegian: Lyriske stykker) is a collection of 66 short pieces for solo piano written by Edvard Grieg. 

They were published in 10 volumes, from 1867 (Op. 12) to 1901 (Op. 71).

The collection includes several of his best known pieces, such as 

Wedding Day at Troldhaugen (Bryllupsdag på Troldhaugen), 
To Spring (Til våren), 
March of the Trolls (Trolltog), and 
Butterfly (Sommerfugl).

This is my arrangement  of No.5 Springdans (Spring Dance/Leaping Dance) from his Lyric Pieces Op.38

Arranged wind quintet

Although Spring Dance is the traditional translation of the Norwegian Springdans, the word refers to its sense in English of leap or jump  rather than to the season Spring.  The booklet notes to Grieg: Complete Works for Piano Solo; Gerhard Oppitz, Piano use  the less ambiguous translation Leaping Dance.

The melody is taken by clarinet, then oboe then flute.

This is the first of three consort sets composed in 1644 for 5 viols with optional organ. The three movements, Fantazy, Pavan and Aire have been arranged for flute, oboe, clarinet in Bb, bassoon and horn in F for players of advanced intermediate standard. The metronome speed indicated is for guidance only and players should feel free to add decorations such as trills where they seem to be appropriate. The contrapuntal style requires the five players to listen carefully to each other and provides an opportunity to develop the feel of being a quintet rather than five players playing the same piece.

Claude Debussy's Préludes are 24 pieces for solo piano, divided into two books of 12 preludes each. Unlike some notable collections of preludes from prior times, such as Chopin's Op. 28, or the preludes from Johann Sebastian Bach's Well-Tempered Clavier, Debussy's do not follow a strict pattern of key signatures.

Each book was written in a matter of months, at an unusually fast pace for Debussy. Book I was written between December 1909 and February 1910, and Book II between the last months of 1912 and early April 1913.
