The cantata „Gottes Zeit ist die allerbeste Zeit, BWV 106- „God`s Time Is The Very Best Time, ranks among Bach's most important works.

It is a work of genius such as even great masters seldom achieve. The Actus tragicus belongs to the great musical literature of the world.

Although Bach's manuscript is lost, the work is agreed to be one of the earliest Bach cantatas, probably composed during the year he spent in Mühlhausen 1707/1708 as organist of the Divi Blasil church, at the age of 22. Various funerals known to have taken place at this time have been proposed as the occasion for the composition, for example that of his uncle Tobias Lämmerhirt from his mother's family, who died inErfurt on 10 August 1707, and that of Adolph Strecker, a former mayor of Mühlhausen, whose funeral was 16 September 1708.

The earliest surviving manuscript, in the hand of Christian Friedrich Penzel, was copied in 1768 after Bach's death. It introduced the title Actus tragicus. The cantata was published in 1876 as part of the first complete edition of Bach's works: the Bach-Gesellschaft-Ausgabe,  edited by Wilhelm Rust. 

The text consists of different Bible passages from the Old and New Testament, as well as individual verses of hymns by Martin Lither and Adam Reusner, which all together refer to finiteness, preparation for death and dying. 

The Arrangement is relatively easy to perform, also appropriate for beginners. 

It is an ideal piece for advanced performers, this music touches deep into the Soul.

The piece was arranged for modern instruments, I introduced some embellishments and interpretation symbols thus shortening the length of some notes, but no notes where otherwise changed or omitted in this arrangement.

Also the original placement of the voices is totally respected, the structure of the piece was simply left as it was composed in its original form.

Bach scored the instrumental parts for a small ensemble of Baroque instruments two recorders, two violas da gamba and continuo.

I propose an interpretation for a modern woodwind quintet in this arrangement. You should feel Free to apply in this piece the Art and technic that expresses entirely your individual skills, Your taste and Soul.

Johann Sebastian Bach wrote some song-like, lyrical pieces, often movements in larger compositions for instrumental ensembles, the so called „Airs.

This piece, the Air of the second movement of the Suite No.3 in D major, BWV 1068 is one of the most impressive master works ever written in the history of the human being. 

The piece does not require virtuoso skills to perform and is appropriate for students or amateurs. Without any doubt very pleasant to listen when played by a dedicated and very well rehearsed ensemble, it has always a very powerful effect on the audience. It can be used in concerts and all sorts of spiritual or religious events.

In this arrangement for woodwind Quintet the bass is shared by the fagote and the horn as two independent voices that perform „as one. For a matter of study and comparison the original cello part is included in this work. It could be eventually used if the ensemble decides to double the original bass line with both the fagot and the horn.    

I also could not resist not to interchange the role of the flute and the oboe on the „repetition :

I have shortened some of the notes and used various interpretation symbols, accents and nuances, they are mere suggestions for an interpretation and are total absent on the original score.

The use of the dot over the notes is called „staccato, it means in this case that the note is shortened to approximately half of its length.

I Had Much Grief, Cantata BWV 21. „Ich hatte viel Bekümmernis, BWV 21.

„Sinfonia

This work marks a transition between motet style on biblical and hymn text to operatic recitatives and arias on contemporary poetry. 

Bach catalogued the work as „e per ogni tempo „and for all times, indicating that due to its general theme, the cantata is suited for any occasion.

With its distinctive gesture of descent and the plaintive lines of the oboe and violin, the Sinfonia, held in dark minor, sets a tone of pain that is characteristic of the cantata.

With its emotional depth and formal wealth, the cantata I had much grief is almost a solitaire in Bach's church music. Performed in Weimar in 1714 and later rearranged several times, it is also suitable as a compositional business card due to its high standards and its shape, which is representative of various types of sentences, and could therefore be related to Bach's application. Bach performed the cantata on 17 June 1714, as his fourth work in a series of monthly cantatas for the Weimar court which came with his promotion to concert master. The Work was transposed to D minor during the Köthen years, and used in November 1720 for a performance in Hamburg to apply for the position as organist at St. Jacobi. As Thomaskantor in Leipzig, Bach performed the cantata again on his third Sunday in office on 13 June 1723. For this performance, he also changed the instrumentation, adding „for example four trombones to double the voices in the fifth stanza of the hymn. This version was used in several revivals during Bach's lifetime and is mostly performed today. 

From the plaintive sinfonia to the arias and duets touching in their pain and charm to the speaking rhythmic psalm and chorus choirs, a development arc spans that transforms suffering and grief into consolation and trust and culminates in an apotheosis reminiscent of Handel of the victorious lamb, Hardly ever has Bach put the process of a relentless self-questioning and spiritual healing as convincingly as here.

This arrangement of the sinfonia is intended for modern instruments. 

The original score was translated into modern music literature standards thus simplifying the approach and helping to understand the legacy of baroque music in our modern times.

A few embellishments and interpretation symbols where added thus mostly shortening the length of some notes. Some „fortes and „pianos are also included. 

The arrangement is absolutely faithful to Bach`s versions, not adding or omitting any notes from the original sources.

2018 Chamber Music Contest Entry

As a violin player this was always one of my beloved pieces and it has accompanied all my Life. The G minor Fuga is the most compact of the three fugues in the volume for violin solo (and note that in this versions they are not in fact fugues in the proper sense of the word, but rather a kind of fugue/Baroque-concerto hybrid form). It was also transcribed for lute by Bach at some later time (BWV 1000).

My arrangement is based on a version of this piece for the organ made by Bach himself - BWV 539. I follow very intimately the organ version, not adding or letting out any of the original notes.

As an arrangement I transposed it to H-Minor and some of the notes where made through the interpretation symbols more or less shorter in order to accentuate the polyphonic, rhythmic and natural dynamic of the piece. I also added some legatos. Crescendos, or fortes and similar indications are left out like in the original, waiting for your own interpretation.

In the musical consciousness of Bach the polyphony and dialog between the voices were a projection of an ideal world for the Human Society and this should be in the first line of focus and in the mind of all the members in the group.

The power of this piece comes from within its structure and relays in its polyphonic dimension.

Allow yourself to focus on the Art of enhancing the beauty of this dialog, the bless of communicating with each other.

Bach is Love - Love each another

I really advise all performers to have a very humble and sensitive approach in the interpretation of this piece towards loudness because you will have to be listening to each other very carefully while performing.

Linear time, sound and silence are the basic of dynamic expression. Dynamic will than happen naturally and without much effort when bringing the „Art of playing the silence and the Art of the „duration of the notes to a state of consciousness within the whole piece itself.

Often in the old music notation the duration of the notes is longer written in the score then it should be played. Understandable because It takes a lot more time for a composer to write in detail the sound and the silence than to write only the raw length of the notes! Back in those times the performing artists were trained very well to read their raw parts and became very skilled in making their own thing out of the scores so the composers did not have to worry with so much detail like nowadays. In some scores we even find words like:-„please play this note simply as written and without embellishments!

On the original score of the Fuga a sixth voice joins the group between bars sixty and sixty one and this voice can be heard very well in the sound file.

This „Ghost voice is noted on the clarinet part as an extended possibility. To play it with just one clarinet is absolutely possible as well as arbitrary. Do at will some experiments and let than the group decide. In case of doubt play simply the bottom voice or let yourself get inspired with the sound file. One of my suggestions would be also to play the bottom line as long as the other one is silent, than jump to the upper voice as it comes in and go back again to your usual voice while the other voice „takes a break.

This work brought me a new insight into the consciousness and the universal nature of Bach`s music.

It requires high skilled and experienced artists to execute.

Originally written in B minor, Bach transposed it to A minor and, while preserving the melodic outline as conceived by Vivaldi for four violins, this later adaptation, from around 1730, for four harpsichords and string orchestra, is far more ambitious. In it, Bach has both tightened and expanded Vivaldi's counterpoint, enriched it with lusher harmonies and expanded the solo parts with greater complexity and greater clarity. Written in the standard three-movement concerto form of the Baroque period, Bach's Concerto for Four Claviers in A minor is a virtuoso piece for the soloists. Regis Bookshar has now rearranged the first movement of this concerto, marked Allegro, for a Woodwind Quintet, consisting of 1 Flute, 1 Oboe, 1 Clarinet, 1 French Horn and 1 Bassoon, while maintaining the energy and virtuosity of Bach's original work. This arrangement is intended to be performed by accomplished players and may prove to be a huge challenge for many players, but, I think, it will be worth the effort. Included are a score and a complete set of parts (43 pages). In addition to this version for a Woodwind Quintet, other arrangements of this selection are also available for a variety of Instrumental Quintets, some of which are in the original key of Concert A minor and some have been transposed to Concert G minor, making it a little easier for some performers, as well as numerous other arrangements in a wide variety of styles. 1: Air on the G String - The original piece is part of Johann Sebastian Bach's Suite No. 3 for orchestra, in D Major, BWV 1068, written for Prince Leopold of Anhalt. The so-called Air on the G String dates from one of these latter employments. In the service of the Prince of Cöthen, Bach composed not only the famous Brandenburg Concertos, but also several orchestral suites, from the third of which comes the Air on the G String. This curious title derives from a later arrangement of this piece for violin solo, in which the melody is played entirely on the lower, higher string of the instrument. ID: S0.1189699

2: Arioso - The Cantata 156 (BWV 156) was written for the third Sunday after Epiphany in 1729, and was first performed on January 23 of that year. The text is by Picander, one of Bach's favorite librettists. Of the four cantatas written by Bach for the feast, it was the last and only one scored for solo voice. This is a choral cantata, employing a choral melody in several movements. Cantata 156, in fact, employs two different choral melodies and texts in the second and sixth movements. A cantata is a sung symphony consisting of several parts, one of which is the Arioso, which is the initial instrumental part. ID: S0.1189899

3: Jesu, joy of man's desiring - This is one of Bach's most beautiful cantatas, made famous by the Jesus the Joy of Men chorus. It was originally composed for Advent 1716 in Weimar. Years later, already in Leipzig, Advent was tempus clausum, there was no music in the churches. Bach then reworked it for the Feast of Mary's Visitation. It is the final chorale of the cantata Herz und Mund und Tat und Leben. Although it is the 32nd cantata composed by Bach, of those that have survived, it was given BWV 147 in the complete catalog of his works. ID: S0.1190007
