This is the first of a set of six Moments Musicaux Opus 94 composed by Schubert for solo piano between 1823 and his death in 1828. The arrangement is for a wind quintet  of intermediate standard and above. (flute, oboe, clarinet in Bb, horn in F and bassoon. .

This is an arrangement for woodwind quintet of the second of a set of six Moments Musicaux which Schubert composed for solo piano between 1823 and his death in 1828. The most important requirements of the players are good intonation and attention to the balance and blending of the ensemble. Players of intermediate standard and above should enjoy the challenge of this piece.

5 Minuets arranged for flute, oboe, clarinet in Bb, horn in F & bassoon. Numbers 1, 3 & 5 each have two trios, numbers 2 & 4 do not have trios. The originals for string quartet were composed on November 19th 1813 - exactly fifteen years before Schubert's death at the age of 31. They remained unpublished until 1886, though they were probably performed at social gatherings of Schubert and his friends along with the 5 German Dances with 7 trios and Coda composed around the same time. The variety of style and content shows Schubert experimenting and pushing the boundaries of the minuet beyond Classical into the Romantic era. Players of intermediate standard and above will enjoy exploring these exuberant pieces.

The original piano pieces have been arranged for wind quintet by Pat Spence. The popularity of the waltz in Vienna began during the 1820s when it was still  developing from a lively peasant dance popular amongst all classes into its later, more elegant phase. These dances were written after 1824 - probably for Schubert's own gatherings and published by Schubert for use in the large dance halls which were all the rage at the time.  The three dances would have been played as one continuous piece for dancing and the tempo would not alter.
