City of Angels is a traditional woodwind quintet comprised of a bassoon, French horn (which is a brass-woodwind crossover instrument), clarinet, flute, and oboe. The piece was inspired by a road trip to LA during spring break of 2019, which later turned into a dystopian reality of traffic noise, smog, structural vandalism, and obvious wealth inequality. My expectations were built on 1960’s and 70’s sitcom shows like The Beverly Hillbillies and The Brady Bunch. It sure seemed like a gorgeous place to live, so this is how I begin the quintet, telling the story of the city’s development throughout time. Abundant orange groves in tall valleys swooping towards the Pacific ocean, slowly adding businesses and iconic features, followed by the decay. At the end of the piece, the first few hopeful melodies are remembered, but they’re somewhat distant and cold. The PDF download includes the score followed by each individual part.

Barnacle Bill by H Ashworth-Hope is an instantly recognised melody for generations of people in the UK. It has been used as the signature tune to Blue Peter, the longest-running children's TV show in the world. The original recording of the theme by Sidney Torch and the New Century Orchestra was used until 1979 when it was replaced by an arrangement by Mike Oldfield of 'Tubular Bells' fame. Since then there have been several versions.This lively arrangement for Wind Quintet features the upper woodwind sharing the main melody between them. The lower parts have their moment with the second theme before the recapitulation of the tune.
