This wind quintet arrangement is based on the Holst version and combines the composer's beautifully simple harmony with the arranger's counter-melodies and intricate wind writing. Lovely writing for all instruments. An ideal work for Christmas concert programming.This is a through-composed instrumental arrangement that explores the melody and harmonies of the Holst hymn in 3 differently arranged verses. After a short introduction the first verse uses Holst’s original 4-part harmonisation in its beautiful simplicity, with oboe and flute taking turns to play the top line. In verse 2, the French horn presents the tune in a lower register while the bassoon plays a Baroque style ‘walking bass’. The flute,oboe, and clarinet weave countermelodies above them, introducing new material for a Pachelbel-like interlude of an ascending sequence - bringing the music to a climax before subsiding into verse 3. Here a slightly ornamented version of the tune returns to the flute and oboe with the new material continuing in the bass line. After another smaller climax we return to the original Holst as the work ends quietly and thoughtfully.

Although Burns wrote the words of the song, he set them to a variation of an existing tune called The Hemp Dresser which dates from the 17th century or earlier. It is a lively jig which is arranged here for Wind Quintet. This wind quintet arrangement begins with oboe and bassoon playing the tune and bass line, almost exactly as they appeared in The Scots Musical Museum, published by James Johnson & Co in six volumes between 1787 and 1803. The other instruments all get the opportunity to play the melodic line in the ensuing 5 verses, as the arrangement gets more complex and fun. The arranger makes great use of the tritone; or devil’s interval as it is often known because of its unsettling presence. However, in this arrangement it merely adds to the fun and excitement.Great fun for all!

It was originally scored for: 2 flutes, 2 oboes, 2 clarinets, 2 bassoons, 4 horns, 2 trumpets, 3 trombones, tuba, timpani, cymbals, bass drum, snare drum, and strings. However, it is often performed today by a standard Military Band, consisting of woodwind, brass, and percussion sections. Wind Quintet (Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Horn, Bassoon) This wind quintet version of Schubert's Erl-King is equally at home as a standard recital piece or used as a piece of ghostly music at Halloween. Erlkönig (The Erl-King) is a dramatic poem by the famous German writer and poet, Goethe, written in 1782. Although it has been set to music by many composers, the most well-known is the 1815 setting by Franz Schubert for voice and piano. The Erl-King is a challenging work for the singer because they must portray four distinct characters; narrator, father, son and the Erlkönig himself. Schubert's writing is different for each character in terms of pitch, harmony, rhythm, key (major and/or minor), and melodic shape. Singers usually alter the timbre of their voice to emphasise the different roles. In this arrangement for wind quintet, the arranger takes the timbre differences a step further by assigning the characters to different instruments in the quintet. The flute plays the role of narrator, the clarinet is the anxious son, the horn plays the reassuring ( but then worried) father, and the oboe plays the Erlkönig with his beautiful enticing melodies that try to lead the boy astray. The bassoon plays the rumbling and troubling bass line that helps set the mood.

The Songs Without Words are short, lyrical piano pieces that were intended for the drawing room but also well suited to the recital room. The Spring Song is one of the most well known and has been arranged for various combinations, including an arrangement by the composer for piano duet, and by others for small theatre orchestra and symphony orchestra. This arrangement for wind quintet remains in the original key of A Major, which Mendelssohn probably chose for its bright, Spring-like qualities. It has since become one of the most popular American musical works of the twentieth century, with On the Trail being the most well-known movement. It portrays a cowboy and his burro (donkey) sauntering through the Grand Canyon, coming across an oasis and a lonely cabin where they hear a music box playing, before continuing their journey. All this is portrayed in the music, including the braying sound of the donkey, its clip-clopping along and the cowboy singing a relaxed Western style song.This lovely and fun arrangement for wind quintet remains faithful to the original; retaining its structure, key and, where possible, its instrumentation. The only section omitted is the violin cadenza. The original orchestral work includes clarinets in Bb. This arrangement is also written for Bb clarinet but an alternative clarinet in A part is included, which is more suited to the key of the work.This is an ideal recital piece for either formal or informal concert settings. This allows the detail and quirky harmonies to be savoured and enjoyed.The TV series ‘Allo ‘Allo with its iconic theme tune will be fondly remembered by anyone from the UK of a ‘certain age’, and by those who know it from the many repeats on cable and streaming channels. It was also broadcast in other parts of the world and ran for 9 series between 1984 and1992. The show was set in occupied France during the second world war and featured the café of René Artois. René had to contend with serving food and drink to the German officers in his café, while supporting members of the French resistance and concealing British spies.
