Each piece is the characteristic of a different month of the year in the northern hemisphere. Following is a translation of the poetic epigraph contained in the Russian edition (all chosen by the publisher Nikolay Bernard) for September: It is time! The horns are sounding! The hunters in their hunting dress are mounted on their horses; in early dawn the borzois are jumping. Parts of this piece are reminiscent of the horn call in the 1812 overture. Fun for each player.

The opening theme (repeated at the end of the piece) brings about images of hunting horns and horses galloping. The quieter middle section exploits interplay between oboe and clarinets, then adding in bassoon and flute, before a return to the rousing opening theme.
