Capriccio may be thought of whimsically, as a fantasy, while Ballata can be treated as a dance. Additionally these two ideas may constantly interact as each movement contains traces of the other. As this music is not programmatic in nature, no specific imagery must necessarily be sought after, but rather the material can be woven as the performers see fit within the tempo and dynamic guidelines. Sensitivity should be paid to the note-value relationships present within many tempo changes, as well as hemioli and other perceived metric shifts. Finally, performers are encouraged to explore the full range of textural colors present as this will accentuate the development of these ideas.

Introduction and Fantasia is a woodwind quintet for advanced players not afraid of a challenge. It is a fast-paced piece which requires solid technical skill and a soloist spirit of all five players. It is also an extremely fun piece to play and it is the composer's hope that instrumentalists will find a great amount of joy playing it.

As a student in college, I was amember of a woodwind quintet called Badinage. This group was certainly playful, and each of us had our own sense of humor...it was one of the best quintet experiences I've ever had. This movement is in several sections that reflect playfulness, humor and reflection.Three Trifles for Woodwind Quintet was premiered by the Heart of Illinois Woodwind Quintet in February 2012.I hope players and listeners enjoy these trifles.

Upon receiving this commission, Icontacted several of my friends (Jeff McCray, Matt Morris, and Richard Ramey) and requested lists of the mosthighly regarded staples of the wind quintet repertoire. After studying these works, I selected one of my favoritesubjects from Norse mythology as inspiration. Unfortunately, this did not work out as the work wanted to be toolarge and I could not reduce it down to a small chamber work.At that point, I decided to switch gears and find a new source of inspiration, which I found in a poem by James Yatestitled White Tiger Trilogy. I sketched out three movements based on this poem and was, again, displeased with theresulting work. However, I did very much like many elements from the sketches, so I decided to strip the piece downto these elements and construct one single cohesive movement. I chose my favorite line from the original sketchesand made that the central theme in an extended sonata rondo movement. I was finally pleased with this product thatincluded elements from all of the different versions. Dreams of the White Tiger was commissioned by 111 wind quintets in consortium led by my friend Richard Rameyand is dedicated to all of those who contributed to making this project a reality.

The first movement isbased on a single lyrical theme that is stated throughout by each member of the ensemble in whole or in part. The secondmovement is a slow ternary form and features long expressive melodic lines. The title has no programmatic implication,rather, it expresses my essential interest in momentum and expressive concision in my musical style.

The title alludes to Ode to the West Wind by nineteenth century British poet Percy Shelley. A breezy classicism in the first movement, Breath of Autumn, gives way to an elegiac second movement marked Grave. This movement, Tangles of Heaven, is dedicated to Toledo's great musical leader Bernard Sanchez who died in October, 2013. Heritage writes, While I was composing the quintet, the news came suddenly - and with a great sense of shock and tragedy - that Bernie had died. Deeply saddened, I realized that the second movement was taking shape as an elegy to a great friend. The flute plays an angular, emotional melody, accompanied by somber chords in the rest of the ensemble. An optimistic energy pervades the third movement, Crystalline Streams, interrupted by moments of lyricism and humor. Throughout the 10-minute work, Heritage explores the unique timbres of each instrument and the rich textures of the woodwind quintet. The Toledo Symphony Woodwind Quintet premiered To the West Wind at the 2015 Festival of New Music at The University of Toledo. Performers were Joel Tse, flute; Michele Tosser-Smith, oboe; Georg Klaas, clarinet; Sandra Clark, horn, and Gareth Thomas, bassoon.

However, this was an unhappymarriage, short-lived, with numerous conflicts and separations. Jeanie With The Light Brown Hair, was written asperhaps an attempt to win his wife back. To add to his problems, Foster also ran into deep financial difficulties.Jeanie With the Light Brown Hair was virtually unknown during its time. When it was first published, the royaltieson the ten thousand copies sold, earned just $200 for Stephen Foster. To make ends meet, he had to sell the rights toJeanie, as well as other songs. After his death, the rights to Jeanie With The Light Brown Hair reverted back to hiswife and daughter.It would indeed be a pleasant surprise to Stephen Foster, if he only knew what a wide range of artists have adaptedthis song to different genres. Among solo instrumentalists, Jascha Heifitz, and William Primrose have arranged itfor solo violin and viola. The big bands of Gene Krupa, and Glen Miller have recorded it. The great R & B artist,Sam Cooke used it, as well as opera stars, Marilyn Horne and John McCormick, who added it to their concertrepertoire.The song's frequent airplay in the 1940's, led Spike Jones to create a parody, called, I Dream of Jeanie with theLight Blue Jeans. Les Brown in 1941, created a big band song, Joltin' Joe DiMaggio with the line.....We Dream ofJoey With the Light Brown Bat. Even Bugs Bunny got into the act. The 1960 short, From Hare To Heir, featuresBugs singing, I dream of Jeanie, she's a light brown hareMy arrangement, for woodwind quintet is written to capture a lyric, singing style, which I think Foster had in mind.

Published by Imagine Music - Digital (IZ.CMW183). 9 x 12 in inches.In my search for American composers who were active in the mid to latter part of the 19th Century, I've recently discovered the name, Septimus Winner.Winner, (1827-1902) was a Philadelphia-based song writer and publisher, credited with over 200 method books for a wide variety of instruments, as well as 1500 easy arrangements, and 2000 arrangements specifically for violin and piano. He teamed up with his brother to publish music, and he, himself, had numerous publications both under his own name, and pseudo names: Alice Hawthorne, Percy Guyer, Mark Mason, Apsley Street, and Paul Stenton.Some of his compositions have become classics, and helped to seal his fame as a major song writer of the pre, Tin Pan Alley era. He was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1970. Among his most famous compositions are: Listen to The Mockingbird, published under the name of Alice Hawthorne, Oh Where, Oh Where Has My Little Dog Gone, and Ten Little Indians, which was performed a lot in Europe, and later used as an inspiration for Agatha Christie for her book of the same name; sometimes referred to And Then There Were None.Silver Wedding March was originally written for parlor piano, which ends itself beautifully to small instrumental ensemble combinations. I chose woodwind quintet.
