Prominent Afro-Haitian pianist and composer Justin Elie’s Tango-Habanera Tropical Dance No. 2 captures the appealing elegance of Caribbean music. Elie studied at the Paris Conservatory and settled in the United States in 1921. His adaptations of Haitian melodies into miniatures led him to performances at Carnegie Hall and international concert venues in addition to composing music for silent films, and in 1931 his own New York radio show, “The Lure of the Tropics.� Arranged for a traditional woodwind quintet of flute, oboe, clarinet, horn, and bassoon, with alternate parts clarinet in B-flat substitute for oboe, alto saxophone in E-flat substitute for horn, and bass clarinet in B-flat substitute for bassoon, the alluring work entices audiences and performers. It is equally suitable for junior and senior high school students, and, depending on their ability, even younger students, too. Included are a score and a complete set of parts (10 pages). Away in a Manger is one of the most popular Christmas carols and there are a number of musical settings of it. The most popular musical setting of it in the United States is the tune commonly known as Mueller. It was composed by James R. Murray and was first published under the name Luther's Cradle Hymn, in his collection Dainty Songs for Little Lads and Lasses, in 1887. It was intended for use in kindergarten, school and home.

In this selection, Regis Bookshar has arranged three verses of this popular Christmas carol for a Woodwind Quintet, consisting of 1 Flute, 1 Oboe, 1 Clarinet, 1 French Horn and 1 Bassoon. The first verse is a traditional setting of the tune while the second verse has a more complex accompaniment. The third verse also includes a descant. Between the second and third verses, he has included a short interlude. In addition to this arrangement for a Woodwind Quintet, there are also other Quintet arrangements of Away in a Manger for a variety of instrumental ensembles, as well as quite a few other Christmas selections, readily available for purchase. A woodwind quartet for Flute, oboe, and two clarinets with optional parts for flute and alto sax. Plus a set of fifth parts for bassoon or bass clarinet can allow for the piece being a quintet. The first statement is in the clarinets where it leads into a full ensemble passing the lines amongst the parts. A delightful little segue leads to a modulation where the tune is in the lower lines alternated with flourishes in the flutes. This Alternating texture carries on for some time. Then the tempo picks up for a vibrant exclamation where the theme is once again bantered about where it makes one final boast and concludes.
