By Ray Thompson Music. By Leopold Mozart. Arranged by Ray Thompson. Classical. 28 pages. RayThompsonMusic #150801. Published by RayThompsonMusic (A0.540668).

Original written for a string orchestra of 2 viola, 2 celli and bass/bassoon, I have arranged it for standard windĀ quintet and transposed it from G to Eb I have written a natural horn part in Eb and Bb basso (Hn in F also provided)Leo The ā€œSinfonia Burlescaā€ is a vehicle for the presentation of comedic characters. It demonstrates Leopold Mozartā€™s predilection for laconic musical genre-painting: he dedicates a minuet to ā€œHanswurstā€ (literally ā€œJohn-Sausageā€) familiar from traditional Salzburg street theatre; ā€œSignor Pantaloneā€, the commedia dellā€™arteā€™s wealthy, aged and vainglorious womanizer gets his own conceited Andante. Harlequin, the mercurial and mischievous trickster in the chequered costume, gets the last word, mocking and bamboozling his upper-class audience.Ā .

Composed by Piae Cantiones. Arranged by Ray Thompson. Baroque,Christmas,Classical,Pop. 9 pages. Published by RayThompsonMusic (A0.504005).

Gaudete rejoice [ye] is a sacred Christmas carol, thought to have been composed in the 16th century. It was published in Piae Cantiones, a collection of Finnish/Swedish sacred songs published in 1581. No music is given for the verses, but the standard tune comes from older liturgical books. It is sometimes entitled Gaudete, Christus est Natus. British folk rock group Steeleye Span had a hit in 1973 (No. 14, UK singles chart) with an a cappella recording of the song. Guitarist Bob Johnson had heard the song when he attended a folk-carol service with his father-in-law in Cambridge, and brought it to the attention of the rest of the band. (Unlike the album version which fades up slowly and fades down slowly, the single was at the same volume for the entire length of the song.) This single is one of only three top 50 British hits to be sung fully in Latin.

Now and Then is a song by the English rock band the Beatles, released on 2 November 2023. Dubbed the last Beatles song, it appeared on a double A-side single, paired with a new stereo remix of the band's first single, Love Me Do (1962), with the two serving as bookends to the band's history.

Now and Then is a psychedelic soft rock balladthat John Lennon wrote and recorded around 1977 as a solo home demo but left unfinished.

After Lennon's death in 1980, the song was considered as a potential third Beatles reunion single for their 1995–1996 retrospective project The Beatles Anthology, following Free as a Bird and Real Love, both based on two other Lennon demos of the same names.

Instead, it was shelved for nearly three decades, until it was completed by his surviving bandmates Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr, using overdubs and guitar tracks by George Harrison (who died in 2001) from the abandoned 1995 sessions.

Arranged here for wind quintet, the oboe takes most of the melody

Your Mother Should Know is a song by the English rock band the Beatles from their 1967 EP and LP Magical Mystery Tour.

It was written by Paul McCartney and credited to Lennonā€“McCartney.
Titled after a line in the 1961 film A Taste of Honey, its lyrical premise centres on the history of hit songs across generations.
McCartney said he wrote it as a plea for generational understanding and respect for a mother's life experience.
In the Magical Mystery Tour television film, the song serves as a big production number in the style of a 1930s Hollywood musical. Some commentators view the sequence as cultural satire, as the Beatles are seen dancing and dressed in white evening tails. Your Mother Should Know is in the music hall style, further to McCartney's earlier composition When I'm Sixty-Four.
He first offered it as the Beatles' contribution to the Our World satellite broadcast in June 1967, but the band favoured John Lennon's All You Need Is Love for its social significance.

The initial sessions for the song took place at Chappell Recording Studios in London towards the end of August. The group were visited there by their manager, Brian Epstein, a visit that marked the last time he joined them in the studio before his death on 27 August.

In My Life is a song by the English rock band the Beatles. It appeared on their 1965 album Rubber Soul. Its lyrics were written primarily by John Lennon, credited to Lennonā€“McCartney. George Martin contributed the Ā solo bridge passage.

The song was recorded on 18 October 1965, and was complete except for the instrumental bridge. At that time, Lennon had not decided what instrument to use, but he subsequently asked George Martin to play a piano solo, suggesting something Baroque-sounding. Martin wrote a Bach-influenced piece that he found he could not play at the song's tempo. On 22 October, the solo was recorded with the tape running at half speed, so when played back at normal pace the piano was twice as fast and an octave higher, solving the performance challenge and also giving the solo a unique timbre, reminiscent of a harpsichord.

According to Lennon, In My Life was his first real major piece of work because it was the first time he wrote about his own life.

In 2000, Mojo named In My Life the best song of all time. Rolling Stone ranked it number 23 on its 2004 list of The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time, and number 98 on the 2021 revised list, as well as fifth on its list of the Beatles' 100 Greatest Songs.

i have given 1st verse to oboe, and the 2nd verse to the clarinet.

Taken from the album The Beatles known as the White Album.Ā

Ā It was written by Paul McCartney and credited to Lennonā€“McCartney, and performed as a solo piece by McCartney with solo acoustic guitar.

McCartney explained on Chaos and Creation at Abbey Road, aired in 2005, that the guitar accompaniment for Blackbird was inspired by Johann Sebastian Bach's BourrƩe in E minor, a well-known lute piece, often played on the classical guitar.
As teenagers, he and George Harrison tried to learn BourrƩe as a show off piece. The BourrƩe is distinguished by melody and bass notes played simultaneously on the upper and lower strings.

McCartney adapted a segment of the BourrƩe (reharmonised into the original's relative major key of G) as the opening of Blackbird, and carried the musical idea throughout the song.

My arrangement gives the vocal solo to the oboe.

The horn sustains throughout.

Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band is the eighth studio album by the English rock band the Beatles.

Released on 26 May 1967, it spent 27 weeks at number one on the Record Retailer chart in the United Kingdom and 15 weeks at number one on the Billboard Top LPs chart in the United States. It was lauded by critics for its innovations in songwriting, production and graphic design, for bridging a cultural divide between popular music and high art, and for reflecting the interests of contemporary youth and the counterculture.

Its release was a defining moment in 1960s pop culture, heralding the Summer of Love, while the album's reception achieved full cultural legitimisation for pop music and recognition for the medium as a genuine art form.

Martha My Dear is a song by the English rock band the Beatles from their 1968 eponymous double album The Beatles (also known as the White Album).
Credited to Lennonā€“McCartney, the song was written solely by Paul McCartney about his Old English Sheepdog, Martha. It has been covered by several artists, including Slade, Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass, Phish, World Party, and Les BorĆ©ades de MontrĆ©al.

The song incorporates elements from pop rock music; it also features a music hall-inspired piano line that recurs throughout the piece, as well as a brass section. The song modulates through several keys The song is notated mainly in the key of Eā™ major, showing up embellished chords with jazzy sprinkled dissonances. The verse is a syncopated replicate of the first melodic section adding two extra beats, a technique similar to that used later by McCartney in Two of Us. Though the bridge is in the key of F major, the manner in which it abruptly sets in and exits makes it sound more out-of-the-way than it really is.

Yesterday is a song by English rock band the Beatles written by Paul McCartney (credited to Lennonā€“McCartney) first released on the album Help! in the United Kingdom in August 1965.

Yesterday, with the B-side Act Naturally, was released as a single in the United States in September 1965. While it topped the American chart in October the song also hit the British top 10 in a cover version by Matt Monro.

The song also appeared on the UK EP Yesterday in March 1966 and the Beatles' US album Yesterday and Today released in June 1966.

McCartney's vocal and acoustic guitar, together with a string quartet, essentially made for the first solo performance of the band. It remains popular today with more than 2,200 cover versions and is one of the most covered songs in the history of recorded music.

My arrangement differs from others you may find.
Rather than giving the tune to one player, I have given it in turn to oboe, horn, flute and tutti.
The flute enters after the 1st verse.
The accompaning parts are not simply block chords, but are varied and full of interest to each player.

The chorus section is treat as a chorale, with all the players playing.

Composed by Gustav Holst. Arranged by Ray Thompson. Christmas. 9 pages. RayThompsonMusic #807733. Published by RayThompsonMusic (A0.1209582).

This is my arrangement of Gustav Holst's arrangement.
It is arranged for wind quintet

The French composer Marin Marais composed the tune as a dance for his opera Alcyone of 1706, with the title Marche pour les Matelots.

The tune was subsequently included in Raoul Auger Feuillet's 1706 Recueil de contredansealong with a longways proper dance, La Matelotte, which Feuillet had himself written to go with the tune.

In 1710 John Essex (d. 1744) published an English translation of Feuillet's work called, For the Further Improvement of Dancing, in which the dance is given as The Female Saylor.

The words were written around 1860 while William Morris, then 26, was working as an apprentice in the office of the architect, Edmund Street, presumably under the persuasion of his fellow students who at that time had a taste for part-song. It became known as the Christmas Carol Masters in This Hall (alternative title: Nowell, Sing We Clear)

Ā Gustav Holst incorporated the carol into his work Three Carols H133 (1916ā€“17) along with Christmas Song: On this Day and I Saw Three Ships. Holst wrote the Three Carols for amateurs singing in his Thaxted festivals.

You can check out my arrangemet of this and other
Marin Marais compositions here.
