Composer's Notes
Due Miniature follows two aesthetic ideas, depicted by the name of each movement. Capriccio may be thought of whimsically, as a fantasy, while Ballata can be treated as a dance. Additionally these two ideas may constantly interact as each movement contains traces of the other. As this music is not programmatic in nature, no specific imagery must necessarily be sought after, but rather the material can be woven as the performers see fit within the tempo and dynamic guidelines. Sensitivity should be paid to the note-value relationships present within many tempo changes, as well as hemioli and other perceived metric shifts. Finally, performers are encouraged to explore the full range of textural colors present as this will accentuate the development of these ideas.

Originally composed for solo piano by Erik Satie in 1915. Satie filled these three miniatures with non-standard performance instructions, satiric barbs and modernist prose, scattered about on a carefully, expertly fashioned musical structure of experimental harmonies, strangely static rhythms, and radically miniaturized forms. He seemed to be using his musical scores as his “social media, “trolling� the musical establishment. This is particularly the case with Avant–Dernières Penseés, as well as with Les trois valses distinguées du précieux dégoûté (also published by Creative Spirit in a transcription for woodwind quintet).

Apart from the collection of 'Classical Manuscripts' composed by Fritz Kreisler (1875-1962) and passed off by him as transcriptions of movements by old masters, the violonist published original works very early. Kreisler himself liked to play them as encore pieces, sweetening many a concert with such pieces of 'musical confectionary'. The most famous miniatures are undoubtedly 'Love's Joy' and 'Love's Sorrow', two 'old Viennese dance-tunes' in which Kreisler evoked the coffee-house atmosphere of his home town with wonderful melodies and beguiling harmonies. The miniatures are endearing, lively and catchy, yet with an elegiac air – but full of charm and elegance. These magnificent salon pieces are now available in an arrangement for wind quintet by Joachim Linckelmann.
