Bach’s Italian Concerto BWV 971 was composed for a two manual harpsichord and was first published in 1735.The style is that of the Italian concerto grosso and clearly reflects Bach’s great admiration of the works of Antonio Vivaldi which he had studied extensively. The ritornello style opening and closing movements are lively and joyful enclosing the arioso style Andante of great melancholy beauty. In arranging the Andante I have shared the long melodic line between the five players which will require some careful blending of tone and tuning as the melody passes from player to player. The effect intended is that of a sympathetic conversation between good friends.Players of advanced intermediate standard standard will, I hope, enjoy the challenge of this arrangement of this amazing music.

In 1984 David recast the variations for a quintet of young players in the Wiltshire Youth Orchestra, the new version retaining the feature of highlighting each player in turn with a free for all in the final Rumba.This is a fun piece for quintets of intermediate standard and above and makes a good concert piece of approximately 7 minutes.

Published by Lin Yizhi Ernest (A0.748745). Debussy's The Girl with the Flaxen Hair is an endearing piece and a great introduction to the musical world of Debussy. Every piano player would most probably be familiar with this piece, but not necessarily wind players. However, with this arrangement for Wind Quintet, the expressive voices of this piano piece are further explored by the colours of the Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Horn and Bassoon.The opening solo is deliberately given to the flute, paying homage to another iconic piece of Debussy's, Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune, which opens with a lower register flute solo starting with the same note Db.Conscious decisions were also made to give the phrases in bars 12-13 and 15-16 with larger melodic spreads to the Clarinet, whose expressive qualities across these ranges suit these phrases particularly well.The revisiting of the theme in bar 28, this time in a higher register, was deliberately given to the Oboe and not the flute (not every high register melodies needs to be assigned to the flute). Oboe's higher registers, when played delicately to the point of almost struggling to hang on to the higher notes, suit the sweetness (tre doux) of the solo passage particularly well.Not to forget the characteristic Debussy harmonies that is fully supported and suited to be powered by the French Horn and Bassoon. These lower voices provide the harmonic engine that powers this unmistakable Debussy sound.Truly, this arrangement is a challenge and masterclass in tone colour for the Wind Quintet that demands a simultaneous homogeneity, as well as balance that brings out the Debussy sound, yet allowing each of the characteristics of the Wind instruments to shine through.

I have left the three original wind parts mostly unchanged, with some additional notes as required. I have simplified the string parts in places, making them more playable by the wind player: I have not simply allocated the 5 string parts to the 5 wind players. The second horn part is used for the low sustained notes originally played by the double bass. I have had to utilize notes not in the horns harmonic series, unlike horn 1.
