Anatoly Lyadov's Polonaise (Op. 55 - 1902) for the Unveiling of the Statue of Anton Rubenstein set for woodwind quintet by John Gibson. The Polonaise ( or Polacca) is an elegant dance of Poland that was characterized by a promenade style. In performance, the 1st and 3rd beats are emphasized a bit to match the dance steps. This setting for wind quintet includes flute, oboe, A Clarinet (or alternate Bb clarinet), F Horn, and Bassoon.

I wrote what I thought was an interesting piece, which included some attention-getting pauses.  A colleague liked it and urged me to add some more movements.   So to the first  movement Hurry Up and Wait,  I added Siciliano as the second movement, and Finale (with apologies to Shostakovich) as the third.  For the latter I borrowed a few features of his 9th Symphony.  The mp3 is computer-generated.

I originally wrote this waltz for five saxophones as a project for a film composition class. A and B-flat clarinet parts are included. Apologies for the dull bassoon part, otherwise everyone gets something to do. Suitable for school-aged musicians.

This particular quintet is comprised of a flute, oboe, clarinet, french horn and bassoon. Each instrument has a chance to play the main rhythmical groove of the theme, as well as interplay with the other instruments throughout - so hopefully this should be a lot of fun for everyone to perform.

Apologies that the Sibelius mp3 bounce has messed up some of the clarinet trills - the B/C trill ends up being B/C# for some reason, despite there being no key signature. Who knows what's happening there.
