This entertaining and playful Juba Dance is from Music in the Bottoms, a collection of five characteristic works by the prominent Canadian-American Black composer Robert Nathaniel Dett. Dett studied with notable teachers including composer Arthur Foote at Harvard, was the first African-American to receive a Bachelor's Degree in Music from Oberlin Conservatory in composition and piano in 1908 and received an honorary Masters Degree from the Eastman School of Music in 1932. Arranged for a traditional woodwind quintet of flute, oboe, clarinet, horn, and bassoon, with alternate parts clarinet in B-flat substitute for oboe, alto saxophone in E-flat substitute for horn, and bass clarinet in B-flat substitute for bassoon, it has great audience appeal. The recording is of the entire edition.

Prominent Afro-Haitian pianist and composer Justin Elie’s Tango-Habanera Tropical Dance No. 2 captures the appealing elegance of Caribbean music. Elie studied at the Paris Conservatory and settled in the United States in 1921. His adaptations of Haitian melodies into miniatures led him to performances at Carnegie Hall and international concert venues in addition to composing music for silent films, and in 1931 his own New York radio show, “The Lure of the Tropics.†Arranged for a traditional woodwind quintet of flute, oboe, clarinet, horn, and bassoon, with alternate parts clarinet in B-flat substitute for oboe, alto saxophone in E-flat substitute for horn, and bass clarinet in B-flat substitute for bassoon, the alluring work entices audiences and performers. Organizer, promoter, composer and conductor James Reese Europe, called by Eubie Blake the Martin Luther King of Musicâ€, was the leading figure in the African-American music scene of New York City in the 1910's. Europe composed the spirited Clef Club March as the signature theme for his 125 member Clef Club orchestra that performed at Carnegie Hall from 1912 to 1915. During World War I, Europe directed the 369th Infantry Regiment Harlem Hellfighters Band to great acclaim in performances throughout France. This woodwind quintet arrangement captures the subtle textures of the composer’s chromatic harmonies inspired in the original vocal octet by a poem by T. B. Aldrich. Born of an African father, Coleridge-Taylor was an early 20th century English composer and conductor who was an influential advocate for Black composers.  One of Coleridge-Taylor's rare A Cappella compositions, this is arranged for traditional woodwind quintet of flute, oboe, clarinet, horn and basson and includes substitute parts clarinet in B-flat for oboe, alto saxophone in E-flat for horn and bass clarinet in B-flat for bassoon. Sea Drift is infused with descriptive tone-color painting highlighting the tragic story of the merchant sailor who perishes in a stormy sea to the despair of his lover onshore.
